Maternal depression adversely affects quality of life in children with epilepsy

A study by Canadian researchers examined the prevalence of maternal depression and its impact on children newly diagnosed with epilepsy. Prevalence of depression in mothers ranged from 30%-38% within the first 24 months following a child’s epilepsy diagnosis. The mother’s depressive symptoms negatively impacted the child’s health-related quality of life, but the effects were moderated by the amount of family resources and mediated by how well the family functions and the extent of family demands. Details of this novel study appear online in Epilepsia, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the International League Against Epilepsy.

Bright light therapy for the aged depressed: Study

A new study shows that exposure to bright light may ease symptoms of depression in elderly people. The researchers tried three weeks of bright light therapy using specially designed light boxes and saw that it improved symptoms of depression by as much as 54% in older adults with depression. The light therapy also improved sleep and optimized levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression and often targeted by antidepressant drugs. This is the first study of its kind to show a beneficial effect of bright light therapy on treating depression in the elderly with non-seasonal major depressive disorder.

Delay sex to strengthen marriage: Study

A new study that appeared in the Journal of Family Psychology finds that couples who wait until exchanging vows to have sex are “are happier with the quality of sex” and enjoy a “stable, happier marriage”. The team of researchers assessed 2,035 married couples in an online questionnaire based study called ‘RELATE’.

Nurses start closing hospital beds in protest of staffing levels

The New South Wales Nurses Association warned that it would keep closing-down beds at Royal Prince Alfred hospital in Sydney’s inner west and the Wollongong Hospital until a consensus is reached regarding staffing levels. This Tuesday 40 beds were closed at Wollongong protesting to see a one-nurse-to-four-patient ratio introduced. Beds in the pediatric, intensive care and maternity and emergency wards are spared. Some surgical, rehabilitative and aged care beds are closed.

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals enters agreement with Viropro to develop biosimilar rituximab

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, a biotechnology company with fully integrated commercial and drug development operations with a primary focus in oncology, today announced that it has signed a letter of agreement with Viropro, Inc., for the development of a biosimilar version of the monoclonal antibody drug rituximab (marketed by Genentech/Roche). Worldwide sales of rituximab in 2009 in all indications, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic lymphoma, were approximately $5.6 billion.
