Forty-six percent are not honest with family members and 32 percent admit to lying to doctors.

Scientists to commence new DNA vaccine trial for use in patients with leukemia

A new cancer treatment which strengthens a patient's immune system and enables them to fight the disease more effectively is being trialled on patients for the first time in the UK. The treatment will use a new DNA vaccine, developed by scientists from the University of Southampton, which will treat a selected group of volunteers who have either chronic or acute myeloid leukaemia - two forms of bone marrow and blood cancer.

Jiangsu Aosaikang Pharmaceutical to take 5% equity position in Living Cell Technologies

Living Cell Technologies Limited (ASX: LCT; OTCQX: LVCLY), a global company pioneering the development of a cell implant therapy to treat diabetes, today announced that a binding subscription agreement has been executed in relation to share placement with Jiangsu Aosaikang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (“ASK”). The proposed placement is for the issue of 14,334,080 LCT shares at A$0.12 per share, to raise A$1.72m. This represents a 5% equity stake in LCT, the funds to be received by LCT from ASK not later than 4 March 2011.

Patients unaware of stroke risk with irregular heart beat conditions

Thousand of people who suffer from irregular heartbeats or conditions termed as arrhythmias are unaware they are at high risk of suffering a stroke. A new survey found that two of three people do not know the warning signs of shortness of breath and palpitations. Experts estimate that more than 4,000 strokes a year could be prevented by better awareness among the general public and doctors of the heart condition atrial fibrillation (AF) this manifests as palpitations and irregular heart beat.

A new discovery has shown why some people cannot give up tobacco and may lead to new anti-smoking treatments. The researchers have found a brain pathway which when defective leads to an uncontrollable desire to smoke. This is a “sub-unit” of a receptor protein sensitive to nicotine.

Extreme morning sickness drug comes at a price

Women, who suffer from an extreme form of morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), are shelling out $7,000 for a drug not yet approved for use by expectant mums because they are desperate to control their illness. HG leads to severe nausea, dehydration and fatigue and may require hospitalization. It affects up to 3 per cent of pregnant women - about 9,000 per year in Australia. It may lead to termination of the pregnancy.

$61 million anti-tobacco campaign launched to prevent lung cancer

The Australian Federal Government is backing a $61 million advertising campaign to stop smoking. This is the nation’s biggest anti-tobacco campaign. The message is graphic and simple: every cigarette brings cancer closer. Health groups have backed the campaign but advertising industry experts say the public has become increasingly immune to scare campaigns.

Computer glitch gives two women all clear from breast cancer wrongly

Two Victorian women were diagnosed with breast cancer 3 months after a computer error wrongly cleared them of the disease. This happened at BreastScreen Victoria. Authorities, after a bungle in images and patient details, had to re-examine about 5,000 mammograms of various women in November. The re-examination started before Christmas found 5,336 women to be all-clear and two were found to have breast cancer. One result will be unknown for six months because of unrelated medical reasons. Of the all-clear group two women with cancer were declared clear wrongly.
