Repros prepares for dosing 3 mg cohort in low dose Proellex study in uterine fibroids and endometriosis

Repros Therapeutics Inc. today announced it has commenced preparation for dosing the 3 mg cohort in the Company's low dose study of Proellex® following a safety review of data from women that have completed 8 weeks of treatment at a 1 mg dose. No signals of liver toxicity were detected to date in the 1 mg group. Unexpectedly, low levels of drug activity were detected in this first cohort. The Company plans to commence dosing of the second group, 3 mg Proellex, next week.

Republican lawmakers on the state level are largely against the new health reform law—but they aren't against all of the behemoth legislation. Virginia dominated headlines this week when a federal judge ruled the individual mandate to buy insurance unconstitutional on Monday. Much less noticed: the very next day, a task force appointed by Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell recommended that the state implement a health insurance exchange earlier than federal guidelines require (Kliff, 12/16).

Accelr8 reports $466,362 net sales revenue for first fiscal quarter ended October 31, 2010

Accelr8 Technology Corporation announced its financial results for the first fiscal quarter ended October 31, 2010. Net sales revenues totaled $466,362; net income from operations was $49,974 with total net income of $67,250. For the previous quarter, net sales were $15,549 with a loss from operations of $(423,373) and a total net loss of $(411,981). Shareholders' equity totaled $4,985,682 at the current quarter's end, up from $4,909,778 at the end of the previous fiscal quarter.

GSK, Impax enter global development, commercialization agreement for PD investigational product, IPX066

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Impax Pharmaceuticals, the brand products division of Impax Laboratories, Inc. (Impax), today announced an agreement for the development and commercialization of IPX066, Impax's novel extended release carbidopa-levodopa product, outside the United States and Taiwan. IPX066, an investigational product under development for the treatment of Parkinson's Disease (PD), is currently in Phase III clinical trials.

Florida Judge hears arguments in 20-state health law challenge; says ruling will take time

The Associated Press: Attorneys for 20 states involved in a challenge to the new health law argued Thursday morning before U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson that it will "expand the government's powers in dangerous and unintended ways." The states were seeking "a summary judgment throwing out the health care law without a full trial. They argue it violates people's rights by forcing them to buy health insurance by 2014 or face penalties."

Bayer's SAFYRAL oral contraceptive receives FDA approval

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new oral contraceptive (OC), SAFYRAL™ (drospirenone 3 mg/ ethinyl estradiol 30 mcg/ levomefolate calcium 451 mcg tablets and levomefolate calcium 451 mcg tablets). In women who choose an OC for birth control, SAFYRAL raises folate levels for the purpose of reducing the risk of rare neural tube defects (NTDs) in a pregnancy conceived while taking SAFYRAL or shortly after discontinuing it.

A new study, published online on December 16 in Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, offers new insight into the emotional life of a unique individual who completely lacks the function of an almond-shaped structure in the brain known as the amygdala. Studies over the last 50 years have shown that the amygdala plays a central role in generating fear reactions in animals from rats to monkeys.

FDA approves Neuralstem's IND to initiate NSI-189 Phase Ia safety trial in major depression

Neuralstem, Inc. today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its Investigational New Drug (IND) application to initiate a Phase Ia safety trial to test NSI-189, its first small molecule compound, in major depression.
