Quest initiates dosing in Phase I clinical trial with SL052 Photodynamic Therapy in prostate cancer patients

Quest PharmaTech Inc., a pharmaceutical company developing and commercializing products for the treatment of cancer, today announced the dosing of the first patient under the Company's recently initiated Phase I clinical trial with SL052 Photodynamic Therapy in prostate cancer patients. The study will evaluate the localization, safety, tolerability and preliminary treatment response of SL052 photodynamic therapy in 18 patients with localized prostate cancer.

The Sacramento Bee reports that 12 of 13 school districts in Sacramento County don't have enough money to pay for their retirees' health benefits "and are not setting aside money to pay for them, according to a grand jury report released Monday."

Preliminary data from Achillion Pharmaceuticals' Phase 1b clinical trial of ACH-1625 reported

Achillion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today reported additional preliminary data from its Phase 1b clinical trial of ACH-1625, which demonstrated that both the third and fourth patient cohorts receiving treatment with ACH-1625 achieved meaningful reductions in HCV RNA after five-day monotherapy, with continued safety and tolerability in patients with hepatitis C.

Debate over benefits and privacy concerns in the proposed Australian e-health scheme

There has been a move towards complete computerization of health and related information in the Australian Government’s e-health scheme that will be set up in the next two years. This scheme is purported to cost $467 million of taxpayers’ money. The plan has been criticized because of the fear that all test results; prescriptions etc. will then be available on a national database and accessible over the internet.

A 75 minute wait for ambulance costs life of a heart patient in North Queensland

On Monday a 44 year old man from Marian west of Mackay, called an ambulance after he developed heart problems. The paramedics reached his home more than an hour later to find him dead. The man called an ambulance at 1.31pm (AEST) on Monday but the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) said paramedics did not arrive until 2.46pm.

The grant will support an innovative global health research project conducted by Eugene Y. Chan, M.D. titled "Optomagnetic Finger Scanner for Malaria."

SunOpta to sell Canadian Food Distribution Assets to United Natural Foods

SunOpta Inc. today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement with United Natural Foods, Inc. ("UNFI") and a wholly-owned subsidiary of UNFI to sell the Company's Canadian Food Distribution Assets for cash consideration of approximately CDN $68 million. The transaction is subject to certain customary closing conditions and is expected to be completed by early June 2010.

Amorfix Life Sciences and Epitomics, Inc. announced today that they have entered into an agreement to develop high-affinity monoclonal antibodies against a number of targets for cancer. Amorfix has identified several disease specific epitopes (DSEs) on misfolded proteins with their proprietary ProMIS(TM) computational platform discovery technology, which will be used by Epitomics to generate highly specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs).
