To streamline the imaging process for MR technologists and enable overall exam efficiencies, as well as enhanced diagnoses, Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. will introduce the advanced M-Power user interface. M-Power is a new user interface that improves technologist efficiency by reducing the number of steps technologists go through during exam set up and features advanced post-processing software.

Parkinson Society Canada awards Quebec scientists $573,384 for research

Quebec Parkinson researchers receive a record $573,384 in funding from Parkinson Society Canada to increase their efforts to identify the causes of this degenerative brain disease for which there is currently no cure. At a Research Innovation event in Montreal this evening, hosted by Parkinson Society Quebec in partnership with McGill University and the CHUM, 11 Parkinson scientists will be lauded for their efforts in getting closer to a cure.

Eckert & Ziegler enters exclusive sales agreement with Zyklotron for Fluorodeoxyglucose

Eckert & Ziegler Strahlen- und Medizintechnik AG, a company specializing in special compounds for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, via its subsidiary company Eckert & Ziegler f-con Deutschland GmbH closed an exclusive sales agreement with the Karlsruhe-based ZAG Zyklotron AG for the regular delivery of Fluorodeoxyglucose (18F) (FDG). FDG is used in the context of the so called Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for the safe and quick recognition of even the smallest tumour foci.

NC family hopes to win Pepsi Refresh Project grant to fund research for Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood

A Rolesville, NC family is hoping to win the Pepsi Refresh Project that could help to find a cure for a rare neurological disorder for which there is no current cure. Matthew Wuchich, age 3, was diagnosed with Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood or AHC when he was 18 months old. Winning the grant is important to the family and to others with the disease since rare diseases often are overlooked by more common ailments.

Scientists establish new biological links between early puberty and obesity

An international group of scientists, including researchers at the Medical Research Council (MRC), has discovered 30 genes that control the age at which girls reach sexual maturity. They found that many of the genes responsible for puberty also play a strong role in how the body metabolises fat, establishing new biological links between going through puberty at a young age and being at increased risk of obesity.

A new study released today estimates that the global initiative to eradicate polio could provide net benefits of at least US$40-50 billion if transmission of wild polioviruses is interrupted within the next five years. The study provides the first rigorous evaluation of the benefits and costs of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI)--the single largest project ever undertaken by the global health community. The study comes at a crucial time--following an outbreak in the Republic of the Congo and one in Tajikistan earlier this year--that highlight the risk of delays in finishing the job on polio.

Racial disparities in risk and survival among children with neuroblastoma: Study

Black, Asian, and Native American children are more likely than white and Hispanic children to die after being treated for neuroblastoma, according to new research on the pediatric cancer. The study, of more than 3,500 patients with the disease, is the largest ever to look at racial disparities in risk and survival for the most common solid cancer found in young children.
