Somaxon Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the in-licensing, development and commercialization of proprietary branded pharmaceutical products and late-stage product candidates for the treatment of diseases and disorders in the central nervous system therapeutic area, today announced that the website of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicates that an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for a generic version of Silenor® (doxepin) 3 mg and 6 mg was submitted on September 16, 2010.

Protestors in Britain have called for a ‘watershed’ for alcohol advertising on TV amid claims that millions of children watched the ads during live World Cup games. Alcohol Concern UK says that children as young as four watched alcohol ads from brands such as Stella Artois, Magners, Fosters, Carling and WKD during the World Cup.

Tylenol batch recalled due to strange smell

Johnson and Johnson’s (J&J) commonly used over-the-counter painkiller Tylenol has been recalled again in some batches because of complaints of a musty or moldy odor in the product. The company is facing a U.S. congressional probe of quality control lapses in the past as well. The drugs recalled to date include the painkiller Motrin and allergy treatment Benadryl as well as this batch of 100,000 bottles of Tylenol.

Crackdown on liquor licensing breaches needed: Doctors

AMA Victoria has urged the State to look deeper into liquor licensing breaches and has alleged that there have been only four prosecutions out of the near 15,200 breaches. There were 1,200 venues who were reportedly supplying liquor “other than in accordance with the license”. AMA Victoria has asked the state government to introduce harsher penalties for venue operators that breach their liquor licensing conditions.

Higher Medicaid reimbursement rates could increase childhood vaccinations

Reuters: A new study in the journal Pediatrics suggests that raising Medicaid reimbursement rates could help more children from low-income families receive flu vaccinations. "Although the vaccine itself is provided free of charge to children covered by Medicaid, doctors are only reimbursed for about half the cost of administering it," and are losing money in the process, say researchers.

Virginia Attorney Gen. Ken Cuccinelli II (R) will argue that Congress overstepped its constitutional authority by enacting a provision that requires individuals to purchase health insurance by 2014 or pay a fine.
