Family Research Council President Tony Perkins applauded today's preliminary injunction that for now stops taxpayer funded embryonic stem cell research. Judge Royce Lamberth noted that the imposition of an injunction required that those challenging the government's funding demonstrate a substantial likelihood of success on the merits for their arguments.

Consumer Driven Health Plans grow at 18.1%

Consumer Driven Health Plans (CDHPs) in the U.S. experienced continued growth this year – albeit at a slower rate than in 2009 – according to preliminary results released by United Benefit Advisors (UBA) from its 2010 UBA Health Plan Survey, the nation's largest health plan benchmarking survey, with 17,113 plans from 11,413, employers.

Heart to Heart International sends shipment of aid through IMC to help flood victims in Pakistan

An estimated 20 million people in northwest Pakistan have been displaced by the worst flooding in decades. In response, Heart to Heart International has already sent an initial shipment of aid valued at $150,000 (U.S. wholesale) through its humanitarian partner, International Medical Corps (IMC), and more aid is on the way.

Consumers economizing on healthcare in ways that might be dangerous: Poll

More than two-thirds (69%) of Americans currently taking a prescription drug say drug makers have too much influence on doctors' prescribing decisions and half say that doctors are too eager to prescribe a drug when other non-drug options are available for managing a condition. Those are just some of the concerns raised by Americans in a new prescription drug poll by the Consumer Reports National Research Center. CVD prevention strategies for high-risk individuals may widen health inequalities

In a Policy Forum published this week in PLoS Medicine, Simon Capewell and Hilary Graham review different population strategies for preventing cardiovascular disease and conclude that screening and treating high-risk individuals may be ineffective and widen social inequalities. The authors conclude "there is evidence that CVD prevention strategies for screening and treating high-risk individuals may represent a relatively ineffective approach that typically widens social inequalities.

Merck today announced the Merck Company Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are committing an additional $60 million to support Botswana's African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships (ACHAP). Pharmasset commences dosing in PSI-7977 Phase 2b study for chronic hepatitis C

Pharmasset, Inc. announced today that dosing has begun in a Phase 2b study of PSI-7977, a nucleotide analog polymerase inhibitor for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C (HCV). The trial will evaluate PSI-7977 200mg QD and 400mg QD in combination with pegylated interferon alfa 2a and ribavirin, the current standard of care (SOC) in patients with HCV genotype 1 who have not been treated previously.

European RIS/PACS market to reach $1,353.3 million in 2016

While the penetration of picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) in European hospitals is 80 per cent, the modern radiology information system (RIS) that drives PACS has only reached a penetration level of about 41 per cent. Legacy RIS modules ubiquitously dominate the market and many hospitals are reluctant to install a new RIS due to complications associated with training a large group of staff as well as concerns over data migration and security.
