Researchers to develop technologies that can mask horrid taste of children's medicines

A spoonful of sugar is the traditional way to help medicines 'go down'. But getting young children to take foul-tasting medicines - even if their lives depend on it - requires more than a bit of added sweetener. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), each year over eight million children die of diseases that could be avoided if essential medicines were available in appropriate formulations for children.

Proposed 25% cut in tobacco taxes will cost Maine $96.2M in future health care costs

Declaring it an "irresponsible policy that will cost Maine millions in higher health care costs and weaken efforts to protect kids from smoking" the Tobacco-Free Kids Action Fund called on Republican gubernatorial candidate Paul LePage to stop supporting a proposed 25 percent cut in the state's tobacco tax.

UK IPO rejects revocation action by Biogene against Enigma's patents

Enigma Diagnostics Limited, the decentralised and point-of-care molecular diagnostics company, announced that the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has rejected a revocation action brought by Biogene against three patents licensed exclusively to Enigma by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), part of the UK Ministry of Defence.

ESHRE study shows advantages of CGH technique in IVF procedure

Two women taking part in the world's first controlled study of a comprehensive genetic screening test before IVF have given birth to healthy babies. The babies, twin girls born in Germany in June and a singleton boy born in Italy in September, are the first deliveries in a pilot study of comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH) by microarray, a new method of screening oocytes for IVF for a full range of chromosomal disorders.

Study distinguishes 4 groups of pathological gamblers

Disorganised and emotionally unstable, poorly adapted, suffering from alcohol problems, impulsive, or with a "globally adapted" personality. These are the features of the four diagnosed types of compulsive gamblers identified by researchers at the University Hospital of Bellvitge (IDIBELL) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). According to the scientific team, only one of these four shows signs of a significant pathology.
