BioCryst to commence Phase 2 study of BCX4208 alone and in combination with allopurinol in gout patients

BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced it is initiating a Phase 2 study of BCX4208 alone and in combination with allopurinol in patients with gout. BioCryst recently reported positive results from part one of its Phase 2 monotherapy study of BCX4208 in patients with gout and is now moving forward as planned with an additional Phase 2 trial of BCX4208.

Donald M. Pedersen of Salt Lake City receives AAPA's 2010 Outstanding PA of the Year Award

Donald M. Pedersen, Ph.D., PA-C, of Salt Lake City, Utah, received the American Academy of Physician Assistants' 2010 Outstanding PA of the Year Award at the organization's 38th Annual Physician Assistant Conference in Atlanta yesterday. Pedersen has shaped PA education at the University of Utah School of Medicine for more than three decades, headed the implementation of the university's Master of PA Studies degree, and pioneered the program's international clinical activities in Papua New Guinea and Thailand.

Seattle's Phoumy Bobby Bounkeau receives 2010 Humanitarian PA of the Year Award from AAPA

Phoumy Bobby Bounkeau, PhD, PA-C, of Seattle, Wash., received the American Academy of Physician Assistants' 2010 Humanitarian PA of the Year Award at the organization's 38th Annual Physician Assistant Conference in Atlanta yesterday. Bounkeau, of Lao and Thai descent, co-founded the CME training project, a program that provides funding for rural Lao health workers to travel from their villages to the large city of Luang Prabang, Laos, to participate in much-needed continuing medical education.

Sound repetition helps memorize complex sounds

Sound repetition allows us to memorize complex sounds in a very quick, effective and durable way. This form of auditory learning, which was evidenced for the first time by researchers from CNRS, ENS Paris, and Paris Descartes and Toulouse 3 universities, is believed to occur in daily life to help us identify and memorize sound patterns; it allows, for example, immediate recognition of sounds which become familiar through experience, such as the voice of relatives.

Research team confirms gene mutation associated with serious forms of leukaemia

The University of Navarra, together with the University of Oxford and three other European centres, are taking part in a project to discover the origin of myelodysplasia, an ailment with a predisposition to develop into leukaemia. In the work, patients from 19 hospitals in the north of Spain - including the University Hospital of Navarra - were analysed, as well as from England, Italy, Sweden and Germany.
