... in response to Morphine for cancer pain relief
  1. Charles Winter Charles Winter United States says:

I caFn't believe all of the negative comments about morphine that I've seen here.

I have incurable advanced metastatic cancer, which has spread to innumerable pelvic lymph glands and bone.       I was having a lot of pain which Norco and even the Fentanyl patches couldn't manage.      No Fentanyl patch would stay on my body, no matter where it was placed, and no matter how much adhesive tape was put on it.

Finally, I was placed on a low dose of morphine, which at first depressed me, as I thought of morphine only as being for extreme circumstances, such as emergency care for broken bones, and for end-of-life.          And I was worried about maintaining mental clarity.           Instead, the morphine has been a blessing, and is nothing like I expected it to be.        It isn't handling all of my pain (I also have arthritis) and I have hydromorphone ---Dilaudid--for breakthrough pain.         The only thing bad about the morphine now is the constipation.        I'm resigned to the fact that my disease is incurable and that I'll have to be on morphine in increasing doses for the rest of my life.    and I'm thankful for the relief from pain that the morphine provides.      But the one thing is that it's so difficult for me to get the prescriptions filled, and makes me angry that an individual such as myself, with a terminal illness, has difficulty in getting the necessary medications because of jerks who use such medications "recreationally."
I hate drug addicts, who make this last part of my life more difficult than it has to be.
Why can't the process of handling painkillers for terminal patients be streamlined?
I have enough stress as it is, without having to run around and give handwritten prescriptions to my pharmacy every month.       Why don't our legislators help to make the process of the end of life a little easier for us?
