Use of agricultural insecticides linked to lasting neurological problems for farmers

New research shows that farmers who used agricultural insecticides experienced increased neurological symptoms, even when they were no longer using the products. Data from18,782 North Carolina and Iowa farmers linked use of insecticides, including organophosphates and organochlorines, to reports of reoccurring headaches, fatigue, insomnia, dizziness, nausea, hand tremors, numbness and other neurological symptoms. Some of the insecticides addressed by the study are still on the market, but some, including DDT, have been banned or restricted.

Early-stage breast cancer patients of Japanese descent that are treated with a lumpectomy and radiation therapy are more likely to be cured of their cancer than women of other ancestries, according to a new study published in the May 2005 issue of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology-Biology-Physics, the official journal of ASTRO, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.

Risk of womb cancer now linked to some hormone-replacement therapy

Researchers in the UK say that certain types of hormone-replacement therapy (HRT) increase a woman’s risk of womb cancer while others do not. The study found that though many post-menopausal women, who have not had a hysterectomy, use combined HRT because oestrogen only are thought to increase the risk of womb cancer, little information exists on the incidence of womb cancer in users of these other therapies.

The population based, 27 year longitudinal study, led by Dr Rachel Whitmer, Gerontological Epidemiologist at Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, Oakland California, involved 10,276 members of Kaiser Permanente medical care programme in California who underwent detailed health checks from 1964 to 1973 when they were aged 40-45 and who were still members of the health plan in 1994.
