Akademiska Hus, NCC to build Skandion Clinic for advanced radiotherapy in Uppsala

NCC Construction Sweden will construct the Nordic region's first clinic for advanced radiotherapy using proton treatment in Uppsala, Sweden. The customer is Akademiska Hus and the construction contract is valued at SEK 470 million. The project is being conducted as a partnership between NCC and Akademiska Hus.

DFG to form new collaborative research centers as of 1 July 2011

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) will establish 21 new Collaborative Research Centres (CRCs) as of 1 July 2011. This was decided by the relevant Grants Committee at its spring meeting in Bonn.

Plasma resuscitation restores damage to endothelial glycocalyx after hemorrhagic shock

Using plasma rather than standard resuscitation fluids seems to improve survival in trauma patients with massive blood loss. Now a new study in animals suggests that this benefit may result from plasma's ability to restore the "endothelial glycocalyx," a special layer lining the blood vessels, reports the June issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, official journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society.

Bitter cumin contains high levels of antioxidants and protects against DNA damage

Bitter cumin is used extensively in traditional medicine to treat a range of diseases from vitiligo to hyperglycemia. It is considered to be antiparasitic and antimicrobial and science has backed up claims of its use to reduce fever or as a painkiller. New research published in BioMedCentral's open access journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine shows that this humble spice also contains high levels of antioxidants.

New ‘nanotech’ weapon against drug-resistant superbugs

Scientists at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) and IBM Research – Almaden have developed the first biodegradable polymer nanoparticles to combat drug-resistant superbugs, such as Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). These nanoparticles can selectively kill the bacteria without destroying healthy red blood cells, and being biodegradable, have great potential to treat infectious diseases in the body. Tick-borne disease identified as emerging threat

Five years ago, large numbers of farmers in central China began falling victim to an mysterious disease marked by high fever, gastrointestinal disorder and an appalling mortality rate - as high as 30 percent in initial reports. Investigators from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention hurried to the scene of the outbreak. On the basis of DNA evidence, they quickly concluded that it had been caused by human granulocytic anaplasmosis, a bacteria transmitted by tick bites.
