Robert Zucker to receive RSA Distinguished Researcher Award

Robert Zucker, Ph.D., director of the University of Michigan Addiction Research Center, and the Substance Abuse Section in the Department of Psychiatry, has been named recipient of the 31st annual Research Society on Alcoholism Distinguished Researcher Award. The award is given to an individual whose research has made significant contributions to the understanding of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, and whose body of work demonstrates leadership in the field.

Researchers compare clinical outcome of patients with smaller and larger AAAs after EVAR

Patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms of less than 5.5 cm have no significant differences in clinical outcomes after endovascular repair than those with larger AAAs according to data from a five-year prospective clinical trial setting. The researchers maintain their recommendation that small aneurysms should not be treated surgically.

Form of epigenetics may play role in pulmonary arterial hypertension: Researchers

A rare but fatal disease of blood vessels in the lung may be caused in part by aberrant silencing of genes rather than genetic mutation, new research reports. Pulmonary arterial hypertension, a syndrome characterized by gradual blockage of blood vessels in the lungs, has been linked to genetic causes in a small percentage of patients. But University of Chicago researchers have now found that a form of epigenetics - the modification of gene expression - causes the disease in an animal model and could contribute to the disease in humans.

Pharmacoeconomic methods rank low as a decision influencer on formulary changes, according to a new survey released today by the Society of Hospital Medicine and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Respondents reported that only 13 percent of formulary system decisions made by Pharmacy and Therapeutics committees in hospitals is influenced by pharmacoeconomic methods.
