Most common methods of delivery include the preferred non-invasive oral (through the mouth), nasal, pneumonial (inhalation), and rectal routes. Much research is now focussing on nanotechnology as a drug delivery method.

Noven enters agreement to acquire global rights to ADHD drug Daytrana from Shire

Noven Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has entered into a Product and Trademark Acquisition Agreement with affiliates of Shire plc pursuant to which Noven will acquire global rights to Daytrana® (methylphenidate transdermal system) from Shire.

Penwest Pharmaceuticals signs merger agreement with Endo Pharmaceuticals

Penwest Pharmaceuticals Co. today announced that it has entered into a merger agreement under which its long-time partner in the development and commercialization of Opana ER, Endo Pharmaceuticals, has agreed to acquire all of the common stock of Penwest for $5.00 per share in cash. The total equity value of the transaction is approximately $168 million.

Elan and Transition Therapeutics report results of ELND005 Phase 2 study for Alzheimer's disease

Elan Corporation, plc and Transition Therapeutics, Inc today announced the results of a Phase 2 placebo-controlled study in 351 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease who received study drug for up to 18 months (Study AD201). Study subjects with MMSE scores between 16 and 26 received ELND005 oral doses of 250 mg, 1000 mg or 2000 mg twice daily or matching placebo. The study's cognitive (NTB) and functional (ADCS-ADL) co - primary endpoints did not achieve statistical significance.

Endo to acquire Penwest for $5.00 per share

Endo Pharmaceuticals today announced actions designed to advance the company's leadership and growth in pain management, including an agreement to acquire all outstanding shares of Penwest Pharmaceuticals for $5.00 in cash per share, or an estimated enterprise value of approximately $144 million at the time of deal close. Penwest has been working with Endo since 1997 on the development and commercialization of OPANA® ER and receives a royalty stream on net sales of the product.

Ikaria announces voluntary recall of INOMAX DS drug-delivery system in US and Canada

Ikaria, Inc. announced today that its INOMAX® DS drug-delivery systems in the United States are being voluntarily recalled due to the potential failure of a pressure switch which may have an impact on the administration of INOMAX® (nitric oxide) for inhalation to patients. This potential failure was identified by Ikaria as part of its ongoing quality monitoring and review processes. This class I recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). All INOMAX DS systems in Canada also are being voluntarily recalled.

Alexza to raise $18.0M in registered direct offering

Alexza Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has entered into definitive agreements with a select group of institutional investors to raise approximately $18.0 million in gross proceeds in a registered direct offering through the sale of common stock and warrants. The Company agreed to sell a total of 6,685,183 units, each unit consisting of (i) one share of common stock and (ii) one warrant to purchase 0.5 of a share of common stock, at a purchase price of $2.70 per unit.

NCI panel recommends Celsion's Phase III ThermoDox HEAT Study as Priority Clinical Trial for HCC

Celsion Corporation announced today that the consensus recommendations of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Clinical Trials Planning Meeting (CTPM) for Hepatocellular Carcinoma have been released and published in the August 2010 issue of Journal of Clinical Oncology, the official publication of American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). In addition to evaluating the current standard of care, the NCI panel also recommended Celsion's Phase III ThermoDox ® HEAT Study as a Priority Clinical Trial for HCC.

GenSpera acquires patent application for medical imaging technology

GenSpera, Inc. announced that it has acquired a patent application from the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Copenhagen for technology relating to medical imaging. The technology incorporates derivatives of thapsigargin, the active ingredient in GenSpera's therapeutics program, coupled with its patented tumor-targeted peptides, to create cancer-specific imaging compounds.

Access Pharmaceuticals initiates Phase I/II dose escalating study for Thiarabine

Access Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced it has initiated a Phase I/II dose-escalating study of its proprietary, anti-cancer drug, Thiarabine, a nucleoside analog for patients with hematologic malignancies (cancers of the blood). The primary objective of the study is to determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) in two different dosing schedules with various leukemias and lymphomas and recommended Phase II dose. The program is being led by Hagop Kantarjian, M.D., Chair of the Department of Leukemia at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced the start of patient enrollment in the EVOLVE clinical trial, which is designed to assess the safety and performance of its fourth-generation SYNERGY™ Coronary Stent. The first patient was enrolled by Ian Meredith, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., Professor and Director of MonashHeart, at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, Australia.

Impax Laboratories total revenue for second-quarter 2010 increases to $153.1 million

Impax Laboratories, Inc. today reported strong growth in the second quarter of 2010 due to an increase in sales from its Global Product sales channel. Total revenue increased $94.7 million to $153.1 million driven by continued strong sales of generic Adderall XR and generic Flomax for which there were no amounts in the second quarter of 2009, as well as increased sales of the Company's fenofibrate products.

Celsion reports net loss of $2.6M for second-quarter 2010

Celsion Corporation, a biotechnology drug development company, today announced financial results for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2010 and addressed the progression of the clinical trials of ThermoDox, Celsion's heat activated liposomal encapsulation of doxorubicin. ThermoDox is currently being evaluated in the Phase III HEAT trial for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma and in a Phase I/II trial for patients with recurrent chest wall breast cancer.

Titan completes 60% enrollment in confirmatory Phase 3 clinical study of Probuphine for opioid addiction

Titan Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that patient enrollment is more than 60% complete in the confirmatory Phase 3 clinical study of Probuphine for the treatment of opioid addiction, and the study is expected to complete enrollment by early fourth quarter of this year, which is almost three months ahead of schedule.

The findings, published recently in the scientific journal, Gastroenterology, provide information that may be important in developing a new therapeutic approach to the treatment of the disease.
