Hillandale Farms of Iowa is voluntarily recalling shell eggs because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Center for Health Sciences to offer certificate program in Phlebotomy

Beginning in October, the Graduate School's new Center for Health Sciences will offer a Medical Laboratory Technician, Associate of Applied Science degree and a certificate program in Phlebotomy. The first of many programs to be offered, both curricula provide a combination of coursework and clinical experience with strong emphasis on employability skills such as problem solving, effective communication, professional conduct, and information and technology literacy.

Researchers develop tiny color-changing sensor molecules

A new approach to building an "artificial nose" using fluorescent compounds and DNA could accelerate the use of sniffing sensors into the realm of mass production and widespread use, say Stanford chemists. If their method lives up to its promise, it could one day detect everything from incipiently souring milk to high explosives.

Cyprotex launches new in vitro toxicology service

Cyprotex PLC, the preclinical ADME Tox services company, today announces the launch of its new in vitro toxicology service, branded as Cyprotox(R). Supporting the new service is an additional 90 square metres of laboratory space at Cyprotex's Macclesfield, UK facility housing the latest technology in multi-parametric automated fluorescent imaging and cellular analysis. This gives Cyprotex's Macclesfield site the same in vitro toxicology capabilities as those of Apredica (Watertown, MA, USA), which Cyprotex acquired on 6 August 2010.
