Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced the initiation of a Phase 2 study evaluating ISIS-FXIRx in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on hemodialysis. Hispanic, Medicaid patients less likely to receive regional anesthesia during hip and knee replacement surgery

Patients who are black, Hispanic, on Medicaid or are uninsured may be less likely to receive regional anesthesia during hip and knee replacement surgery, possibly putting them at greater risk of serious complications, according to a study of more than 1 million orthopedic surgeries being presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY 2015 annual meeting.

Physician anesthesiologist-led care improves experience for patients having outpatient gallbladder surgery

Patients having outpatient gallbladder surgery whose experience was coordinated by a physician anesthesiologist through the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) model of care had shorter wait times before surgery, recovered more quickly after the procedure and were less likely to require care for complications, according to two studies presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY 2015 annual meeting.

U.S. News & World Report has released its annual "Best Hospital" rankings. This 26th annual edition includes information on nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide. U.S. News & World Report named Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore as the third best hospital in Maryland, behind only the academic medical centers at Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland. Mercy also retained its status from last year as the state's top-ranked community hospital.

For the first time ever, consumers across the U.S. today have access to ratings of individual surgeons based on outcomes—how often their patients die in hospital or within 90 days of hospital discharge, have serious complications in hospital, or need to be readmitted to a hospital within 90 days of discharge.
