The Poster Compliance Center Research Department advises U.S. employers that a revised “Equal Employment Opportunity Is the Law” poster including new information about GINA (Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008) was issued by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The new GINA Title II regulations are effective Nov. 21, 2009.

Miami resident pleads guilty on conspiracy to defraud the Medicare program

Miami resident Daisy Martinez pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Detroit to participating in a conspiracy to defraud the Medicare program, Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Criminal Division; U.S. Attorney Terrence Berg of the Eastern District of Michigan; Andrew G. Arena, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Detroit Field Office of the FBI; and Daniel R. Levinson, Inspector General of the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) announced.

FDA approves an expanded indication for BYETTA injection

Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an expanded indication for BYETTA® (exenatide) injection. A recent survey of nearly 650 athletic trainers across the U.S. revealed that in the past 12 months nearly 76 percent of the respondents' athletic programs, mostly high school- and college-based, bacterial or viral skin infections have developed.

Absence of male hormones extends transplanted cell survival, says new study

Trophoblast stem cells (TSCs), cells found in the layer of peripheral embryonic stem cells from which the placenta is formed, are thought to exhibit "immune privilege" that aids cell survivability and is potentially beneficial for cell and gene therapies. Further, the survivability of TSCs has been thought to require the presence of ovarian hormones. However, none of these assumptions has ever been verified.

Ventas reports substantial growth in third quarter 2009

Ventas, Inc. (“Ventas” or the “Company”) said today that third quarter 2009 normalized Funds From Operations (“FFO”) increased 7.4 percent to $103.4 million, from $96.2 million for the comparable 2008 period. Normalized FFO per diluted common share was $0.66 in the third quarter of 2009, compared to $0.68 in the comparable 2008 period. Weighted average diluted shares outstanding in the third quarter of 2009 were 156.5 million, compared to 141.1 million in the comparable 2008 period.

Homelessness declines in Los Angeles; recession pave way for affordable housing

On any given night, an estimated 43,000 people are homeless in Los Angeles' Continuum of Care, according to the 2009 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Report (HC09), released today by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA). The number of homeless people in Los Angeles, while still the highest in the nation, represents an estimated 38% decrease from 2007.
