Hispanic children diagnosed with brain tumors get high-quality treatment at hospitals that specialize in neurosurgery far less often than other children with the same condition, potentially compromising their immediate prognosis and long-term survival, according to research from Johns Hopkins published in October's Pediatrics.

Premature aging of immune system develops amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Premature aging of the immune system appears to play a role in the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease, according to research scientists from the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, and Sheba Medical Center in Israel.

The Stroke Team at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC, including Aquilla Turk, DO, Associate Professor of Radiology, M. Misonix signs exclusive distribution agreement with Neurotechnics

Misonix, Inc., a developer of minimally invasive ultrasonic medical device technology, which in Europe is used for the ablation of tumors and worldwide for other acute health conditions, has entered into a new, three year, exclusive distribution agreement with Neurotechnics Ltd., based in Banbury, England, for the distribution of the BoneScalpel(TM) Ultrasonic Bone Cutter.

Daily doses of imatinib mesylate double survival rates in Ph+ ALL affected children

Results of a phase two clinical trial published October 5th in the Journal of Clinical Oncology show that adding continuous daily doses of a targeted drug called imatinib mesylate to regular chemotherapy more than doubled three-year survival rates for children with a high risk type of blood cancer called Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL).

Stereotactic Radiosurgery for metastatic brain tumors reduces risks of learning and memory problems

Cancer patients who receive stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) for the treatment of metastatic brain tumors have more than twice the risk of developing learning and memory problems than those treated with SRS alone, according to researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Medical Imaging Holdings, Inc., a holding company formed by Galen Partners, today announced it has acquired the Sonora Medical Systems business from Misonix, Inc. The Sonora Medical Systems business will be combined with the businesses of Barrington Medical Imaging and Echoserve, which were acquired by Medical Imaging Holdings, Inc. on September 18, 2009.

Sonora Medical Systems sold to Medical Imaging Holdings for $8 million

Misonix, Inc., a developer of minimally invasive ultrasonic medical device technology, which in Europe is used for the ablation of tumors and worldwide for other acute health conditions, announced today that substantially all of the assets of its subsidiary, Acoustic Marketing Research, Inc., DBA Sonora Medical Systems, were sold to Medical Imaging Holdings, Inc., for $8 million in cash.

Bradycardia more likely in patients taking cholinesterase inhibitors
