ADA commends U.S. Senate on reauthorization of child nutrition programs

The American Dietetic Association commends the U.S. Senate for its bipartisan action Thursday, August 5, to reauthorize the nation's crucial child nutrition programs. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 covers programs reaching millions of children that were scheduled expire September 30.

According to a Lancet Comment, "alcohol remains conspicuously absent from the larger field of research and programming in HIV and substance use. ... Patterns of hazardous alcohol consumption prevail in countries with the most severe HIV epidemics, notably eastern and southern Africa." In addition, "hazardous drinking patterns also dominate in the concentrated epidemics of eastern Europe and Asia, where alcohol use by injecting drug users and other marginalised groups might be an additional barrier to effective efforts to prevent HIV infection."

Poor countries need assistance developing sustainable agricultural systems, USDA Undersecretary says

Governments and aid groups must do more to help the world's hungry develop sustainable agricultural systems, U.S. Agriculture Department Undersecretary James Miller said during an address Wednesday on the final day of the International Food Aid and Development Conference, the Associated Press reports (Hollingsworth, 8/4).

Kaiser Permanente funds 700 grants targeting critical health issues in communities

Kaiser Permanente, one of the country's largest not-for-profit health care organizations, funded 700 grants nationwide totaling approximately $13 million in the second quarter of 2010. The grants this quarter focused on expanding access to healthy food, reducing childhood obesity, and increasing care for the underinsured.

Asian ministers review MDGs progress

South Asia is "lagging behind" in poverty and hunger reduction and is "in danger" of missing key Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets, a U.N. official told Asian ministers gathered to discuss MDGs progress, Agence France-Presse reports. At the meeting, "senior officials told delegates from dozens of countries that global food, energy and financial crises in recent years had jeopardized progress toward achieving the goals set for 2015," the news service writes.

New resources provide services for women fighting breast cancer and for those looking to learn more about preventative breast health.

Children and youth who experience hunger appear more likely to have health problems, and repeated episodes of hunger may be particularly toxic, according to a report in the August issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Jenkins wins three man weight loss challenge by Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet weight-loss regimen

New York Jets defensive tackle Kris Jenkins has won the three-man weight-loss challenge proposed by Head Coach Rex Ryan back in May, defeating Ryan and teammate Damien Woody. Jenkins lost 33 pounds compared to 26 pounds for Woody and 20 pounds for Ryan. A four-time NFL Pro Bowl athlete, Jenkins weighed 390 pounds at the start of the competition and now weighs in at a lean 359 pounds. To help insure his victory, Jenkins had recruited renowned physician, author, and weight-loss expert Dr. Sanford Siegal and followed the Miami physician's popular Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet weight-loss regimen.

First regional student food drive to fight hunger

High schools throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania are invited to join Shire's The Great Food Fight!, the first regional student food drive to fight hunger. The goal: to collect 25 tons of food - the equivalent of 50,000 meals - for Philabundance and the thousands of local families who rely on the food services they provide. Shire will present the school that collects the most food per student a grand prize of $10,000.

Feeding Our Future program serves 12,400 summer lunches to Denver children at risk of hunger

Leveraging a $20,000 "Feeding Our Future" grant from the Sodexo Foundation, St. Anthony Central Hospital, along with volunteers from Sodexo and the Food Bank of the Rockies, serves 12,400 summer lunches to Denver children at risk of hunger. Sodexo's Feeding Our Future program provides school children who rely on free and reduced-price meals during the academic year with nutritious lunches during the summer break.

A Center for Global Development memo offers suggestions for the U.S. to improve its commitment to policies that benefit poor countries after it ranked 17th out of 22 wealthy in the 2009 Commitment to Development Index. Among a set of 20 recommendations, the authors suggest the U.S. "[i]ncrease foreign aid, especially through such vehicles as the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), which gives to relatively well-governed countries, or a global 'Cash on Delivery' fund that would pay countries after making confirmed progress toward agreed-upon outcomes, thereby reducing the proliferation of aid projects," the authors write(Prieto/Roodman).

Researchers watched two groups of mice, both nearing the end of a two-day fast. One group was quietly huddled together, but the other group was active and alert. The difference? The second set of mice had been engineered so their brains produced more SIRT1, a protein known to play a role in aging and longevity.
