FASEB urges LHHS Appropriations Subcommittee to increase NIH budget to $37 billion

FASEB President William T. Talman, M.D. today sent a letter to the House Labor, Health and Human Services, Education (LHHS) Appropriations Subcommittee urging that the budget for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) be $37 billion in fiscal year (FY) 2011. "The opportunities for continued progress have never been greater, but we need adequate resources to ensure that progress is not curtailed," Talman stated.

45% of high school-age students not considering career in healthcare and science fields

Despite the projected need for healthcare practitioners at all levels in a challenging job market, nearly half of high school-age students (45 percent of 13 to 18 year-olds) are not considering pursuing a career in healthcare and science fields. The news comes as a result of a recent survey conducted online by Harris Interactive for University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

Nurses file unfair practice charge with SLRC against Cambridge Health Alliance

The registered nurses of the Cambridge Hospital campus of the Cambridge Health Alliance have filed an unfair practice charge with the State Labor Relations Commission (SLRC) against the hospital for its refusal to engage in good faith negotiations with the nurses in their effort to reach agreement on a new union contract.

Zanett closes $20.6M in new contracts for second-quarter 2010

Zanett, Inc. announced today that Q-2 2010 was a record quarter for the firm with respect to the rate of contracts closed in a quarterly period. Between the period of April 1, 2010 and June 30, 2010, over $20.6 million in new business has been closed. This amount is comprised of 50 different customers, with the largest customer being responsible for a $7.5 million mandate previously announced.

Labor pushes in Mass. and Minn.; Nurses struggle with job hunt despite shortage

Massachusetts's largest health care union is going to try to pull workers at Boston's leading medical centers: Massachusetts General, Brigham and Women's, Beth Israel Deaconess and Tufts hospitals, The Boston Globe reports. The union, led by Veronica Turner since last month, forged a deal in 2009 with Caritas Christi Health Care that gave 3,000 employees raises and bonuses.

Emergency room visits increase in Mass., plus more hospital news

The Boston Globe: In Massachusetts, "[t]he number of people visiting hospital emergency rooms has climbed … despite the enactment of nearly universal health insurance that some hoped would reduce expensive emergency department use. According to state data released last week, emergency room visits rose by 9 percent from 2004 to 2008, to about 3 million visits a year.
