A sleep disorder (somnipathy) is a medical disorder of the sleep patterns of a person or animal. Some sleep disorders are serious enough to interfere with normal physical, mental and emotional functioning. A test commonly ordered for some sleep disorders is the polysomnogram.

People with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a sleep disorder associated with obesity, have more non-calcified or "bad" plaque in their coronary arteries, according to a study presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Collapsing with laughter: Literally

Dr. Claire Allen, 35, suffers from rare and severe form of sleeping sickness that makes her pass out 100 times in a day. She is a research scientist at the British Antarctic Survey and she said that she has suffered from cataplexy, a severe form of narcolepsy that sees her lose control of her body and collapse into a deep sleep – although she remains conscious throughout.

Workers unwilling to disclose work related stress: Survey

According to findings from a survey by mental health charity Mind, millions of British workers have lied to their bosses about taking sick leave when they feel overwhelmed by stress. The survey showed that one in five workers (19%) have taken stress-induced sick leave, but virtually all of them (93%) say they have lied to their boss about the real reason for not turning up. The usual reasons cited are stomach upsets, housing problems or even have a sick relative, rather than admitting the truth.

Cephalon, Inc. today announced that Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) for its medications NUVIGIL (armodafinil) Tablets [C-IV] and PROVIGIL (modafinil) Tablets [C-IV] have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Snoring may destroy grey matter

A new Australian study has found that snoring and troubled nights could be a warning of brain damage occurring while sleeping. The team looked at brain scans of 60 people, aged in their mid-40s and recently diagnosed with a common sleep disorder – obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea often affects overweight and the obese and leads to snoring. Results showed “decreased amount of grey matter” when compared to healthy sleepers.

Seredor acquires United Sleep Diagnostics to expand sleep diagnostic activities

Continucare Corporation announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary Seredor Corporation has further expanded its sleep diagnostic activities through the acquisition of United Sleep Diagnostics, Inc., an operator of sleep diagnostic centers. The acquired business currently operates three independent testing facilities and manages sleep centers at six hospitals located in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, Florida.

Sleep deprived kids at risk of obesity: Study

Children under five who do not get adequate sleep at night are at increased risk for later childhood obesity says a new study. The researchers found that daytime naps are not enough to compensate for sleep loss at nights in terms of preventing obesity. The study is published in the September issue of the journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

According to Australian research, youngsters getting inadequate sleep are at risk of mental ailments. Researcher Nicholas Glozier of the University of Sydney said, the increase in incidence of mental ailments in the young has been puzzling health experts. The answer may lie in inadequate sleep.

Chronic insomnia with objectively measured short sleep duration associated with increased mortality in men

A study in the Sept. 1 issue of the journal SLEEP found an elevated risk of death in men with a complaint of chronic insomnia and an objectively measured short sleep duration. The results suggest that public health policy should emphasize the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of chronic insomnia.

REM sleep behavior disorder may later lead to neurologic disorders

A new study shows that a sleep disorder may be a sign of dementia or Parkinson's disease up to 50 years before the disorders are diagnosed. The research is published in the July 28, 2010, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
