NIH awards Novelos and MGH $1M grant for the study of compounds for radiation-induced lung injury

Novelos Therapeutics, Inc. (OTCBB: NVLT), a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of therapeutics to treat cancer and hepatitis, today announced that the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), in collaboration with Novelos, was awarded a $950,371 competitive grant by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study two Novelos compounds – NOV-002 and NOV-205 – for the mitigation and treatment of radiation-induced pulmonary injury.

Dynavax commences Phase 3 trial for HEPLISAV hepatitis B vaccine

Dynavax Technologies Corporation (Nasdaq:DVAX) today announced the initiation of a Phase 3 registration trial for HEPLISAVTM hepatitis B vaccine in individuals with chronic kidney disease. A second registration trial, a Phase 3 lot-to-lot consistency trial, is expected to begin in early 2010. HEPLISAV is an investigational adult hepatitis B vaccine designed to provide increased, rapid protection with fewer doses than current licensed vaccines.

Chronic viruses found living in prostate tumors

According to Dr. Ila R. Singh, an associate professor of pathology at the University of Utah, "for the first time we have analyzed prostate cancer and normal prostate tissue and found cancers are much more likely to have [the XMRV virus] ... It was also more likely to be present in more aggressive tumors," Singh said. "We found it in 20 percent of the least aggressive tumors and over 45 percent of the most aggressive tumors."

Previous studies revealed that HBV genotypes as well as mutations in the core promoter, precore or HBx gene have been shown to have an association with the clinical outcome of liver disease, however, this is still controversial. It is likely that this depends on the HBV genotype distribution in certain region.
