Regional anesthesia may not make patients more prone to falls after knee replacement surgery

Two types of regional anesthesia do not make patients more prone to falls in the first days after having knee replacement surgery as some have previously suggested, according to a study based on nearly 200,000 patient records in the March issue of Anesthesiology.

iASSIST device improves surgical precision, accuracy in total knee replacements

Each year, approximately 600,000 total knee replacement procedures are performed in the United States, a number that is expected to rise exponentially in the next decade as the population ages. Successful surgeries require precise alignment in the knee, a challenging task made even more daunting by the expected rise in procedures. To help meet this demand, UC San Diego Health System is the first in the nation to use iASSIST, a computer navigation system with Bluetooth-like technology that improves surgical precision and accuracy in total knee replacements, decreasing the need for revision surgery.

Insurgical single-use orthopaedic power tools used in total knee replacement procedure

On February, 5, orthopaedic surgeon Thomas Ferro, MD, successfully performed a total knee replacement procedure using Insurgical single-use orthopaedic power tools. This operation marked the first time FDA cleared single-use, cordless, handheld power tools were used in an orthopaedic operation in the United States. Specialty surgical power tools used to cut and shape bone are required in over 1.5 million orthopaedic procedures annually in the United States.

State highlights: Union, Calif. Hospital Assn. at odds over organization, ballot issues; Ind. hospital cuts worry nurses; N.C. Medicaid overhaul changes

Duane Dauner, president of the California Hospital Assn., emailed the group's board in September with a warning: The leader of the state's largest health care workers' union had told him that if hospitals did not pave the way for the organizing of 20,000 workers, the union would launch ballot measures taking aim at hospital pricing and executive pay. But negotiations on organizing agreements between the two sides stalled. In November, the union, SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, filed two initiatives for the 2014 ballot that would limit hospital prices and cap executive compensation at nonprofit hospitals (Mason, 12/6).

Phase III EINSTEIN trial program: XARELTO reduces risk of DVT and PE

Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today a newly published, pooled analysis of the Phase III EINSTEIN trial program, showing XARELTO (rivaroxaban) is as effective as the standard of care in reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in people with symptomatic DVT or PE, while reducing the incidence of major bleeding by 46 percent.
