St. Jude Children's Research Hospital investigators have identified key components of a signaling pathway that controls the departure of neurons from the brain niche where they form and allows these cells to start migrating to their final destination. Defects in this system affect the architecture of the brain and are associated with epilepsy, mental retardation and perhaps malignant brain tumors.

The first volume in this series, Imaging: A Laboratory Manual, has just been released.

HemaCAM computer-assisted blood cell analysis system automates assessment of blood counts

If a blood count is abnormal, the medical laboratory scientist (MLS) has to manually perform a differential blood count analysis. This costs time and money. The computer-assisted blood cell analysis system HemaCAM by the company Horn has recently been launched on the market and does just this. At the MEDICA 2010 trade fair, which is being held from November 17 to 20 in Düsseldorf, Germany, scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS will be presenting this intelligent microscopy system at joint stand F05 in hall 10.

Study finds cancer cells subject to several major chromosomal changes at the same time

New progress has been made on the road to understanding the origins of genetic changes in tumour cells. The prevalent theory has been that genetic changes in tumour cells come about in multiple stages over a long time. However, a recent study by researchers at Lund University shows that this does not have to be the case at all, but that the cancer cells instead can be subject to several major chromosomal changes at the same time.
