Community based initiative to help combat obesity and promote healthy lifestyles

President Bill Clinton made a special appearance on October 10 to open the Weight Watchers Presents Fun and Fit in the City -- at the Harlem Children's Zone in Harlem, NY. Part of the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival, the free community based initiative -- which drew over 800 attendees -- was created to help combat obesity and provide practical tips for families to follow healthier lifestyles.

In a surprising reversal of long-standing scientific belief, researchers at the Mayo Clinic campus in Florida have discovered that inflammation in the brain is not the trigger that leads to buildup of amyloid deposits and development of Alzheimer's disease.

Study finds link between high levels of pesticide exposure and suicidal thoughts

A new study in China has found that people with higher levels of pesticide exposure are more likely to have suicidal thoughts. The study was carried out by Dr Robert Stewart from the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London together with scientists from Tongde Hospital Zhejiang Province.

Alzheimer's Association appreciates RCN for its generous donation and awareness campaign

RCN Corporation recently donated more than $10,000 towards the Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area Chapter's Reflections campaign and the nonprofit's signature event, the National Memory Walk. Earlier in the year, the company committed $210,000 in donated cable time for cross-channel spots about local Alzheimer initiatives in 2009.

New guidelines from American Academy of Dermatology for treatment of psoriasis with ultraviolet light therapy

Based on an extensive review of the highest quality scientific literature on psoriasis and the opinion of recognized psoriasis experts, the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) has released new guidelines of care for the management and treatment of psoriasis with ultraviolet (UV) light therapy, also known as phototherapy. Recommendations for the use of the most common forms of UV light therapy, as stand-alone treatments or in conjunction with other therapies, were outlined, including patient considerations.

AAFP receives MetLife Foundation grant to counter childhood obesity

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the AAFP Foundation announce that they have been awarded a $150,000 grant from MetLife Foundation, designed to counter the national epidemic of childhood obesity by empowering family physicians with new ways to promote physical activity, nutrition and emotional well-being. The partnership will produce educational materials for children, including books and publications.

Health care lobbyists spend big to win big, consumer groups fight industry deals

Health care lobbyists are on track to set new spending records this year, with some individual companies nearly doubling their investment compared to previous periods, USA Today reports. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America spent almost as much by September as it did in the entire year in 2008. America's Health Insurance Plans has spent $1 million more so far this year than over the same period last year (Schouten, 10/21).

ADA supports IOM’s proposal on school nutrition programs

The American Dietetic Association welcomes a report issued Wednesday, October 21, by the Institute of Medicine encouraging federal school meal programs to adopt standards that increase the nutrition content and limit the calories in meals served to schoolchildren.

Accredo Health Group Inc. announced a 10-year renewal of its 240,000-square-foot headquarters at Century Center, positioning the nation's largest specialty pharmacy and a major fixture of Memphis' health care industry for future growth. The General Investment & Development Companies and Accredo agreed to renew all leases for Accredo's five-building campus, effective January 1, 2010.

FMWC partners with SOGC and SCC to launch Pap test campaign

The Federation of Medical Women of Canada (FMWC) has joined forces with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) and the Society of Canadian Colposcopists (SCC) to launch this year's Pap test campaign during Cervical Cancer Awareness Week. Together, we hope to increase the scope, reach and impact of the campaign. With this collaborative effort, we aim to provide more Pap tests and deal with abnormal results in a more expeditious manner.

The United States Bone and Joint Decade (USBJD) today announces that as part of its 2009 Advocacy Day nearly 80 musculoskeletal patients and patient advocates from across the nation are participating in more than 175 Congressional visits. Patients and their advocates -- physicians, family members and USBJD participating partners -- are raising awareness of the huge burden that musculoskeletal conditions plays on the U.S. These conditions are some of the most costly, common, and disabling conditions to date.
