Swedish Risk Drinking Project surveys physicians and nurses of Sweden

The proportion of health care personnel reporting that they always or often queried their patients regarding alcohol use has increased significantly. This is particularly notable with nurses, where the proportion has doubled to 60 per cent, and midwives, where 92 per cent estimate their capacity to identify risk consumption as good or very good.

Use of minimally invasive procedures for radical prostatectomy has advantages as well as complications

New research indicates that the use of minimally invasive procedures (including the use of robotic assistance) for radical prostatectomy, which have increased significantly in recent years, may shorten hospital stays and decrease respiratory and surgical complications, but may also result in an increased rate of certain complications, including incontinence and erectile dysfunction, according to a study in the October 14 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on surgical care.

National study shows people who work after retiring experience fewer major diseases

Retirees who transition from full-time work into a temporary or part-time job experience fewer major diseases and are able to function better day-to-day than people who stop working altogether, according to a national study. And the findings were significant even after controlling for people's physical and mental health before retirement.

At the Oct. 2-4, 2009 Fourth International Public Conference on Vaccination sponsored by the non-profit National Vaccine Information Center in Reston, VA, 700 citizens from 44 states and 11 nations raised more than $100,000 to launch an international scientific research fundraising campaign to investigate health differences between vaccinated and unvaccinated children and identify those at risk for suffering vaccine injury.

Breast tenderness indicates increased cancer risk among women on combination therapy

Women who developed new-onset breast tenderness after starting estrogen plus progestin hormone replacement therapy were at significantly higher risk for developing breast cancer than women on the combination therapy who didn't experience such tenderness, according to a new UCLA study.
