Breathe Easy, Stay Healthy Campaign for reducing toxic air pollution in Pittsburgh

Today, Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future (PennFuture), joined by leaders from the Group Against Smog and Pollution (GASP) and Clean Water Action, along with Dr. Evelyn O. Talbott of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology and Allegheny County Council President Richard Fitzgerald, announced a major new campaign to reduce the fine soot pollution responsible for Pittsburgh’s number one ranking for dirtiest air for two years running.

Perot Systems forms alliance with medical groups to offer health information technology services

The American Medical Group Association (AMGA), the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and Perot Systems Corporation (www.perotsystems.com) today announced the formation of an alliance (Alliance) that will utilize the deep healthcare expertise of the three organizations to offer electronic health record (EHR)-related training and implementation services to newly established Health Information Technology (HIT) Regional Extension Centers (Extension Centers).

AST urges Senate Finance Committee to adopt a health care provision for transplant drug extension

As the Senate Finance Committee prepares to vote on the amended health care reform package, members of the American Society of Transplantation (AST) arrived on Capitol Hill armed with a letter encouraging the Senate to adopt a health care provision that will extend Medicare's coverage of post-transplant drugs, which are critical to maintaining the health of the transplant patient. Immunosuppressive drugs are currently covered for a period of 36 months.

BMJ News examines outcomes of U.N. Human Development Index

BMJ News examines the results of the recent U.N. Human Development Index, which documents "people's wellbeing in 182 countries and territories around the world." The 2009 report reveals the wide disparities between developing and wealthy countries in the investment in health and health outcomes. "For example, a child born in a country that ranks low on the index," like Niger, "can expect to live just over 50 years—17 years less than in a medium ranked country and 30 years less than in the highest ranked countries," the journal writes.
