The Joint Commission names AMC as Certified Primary Stroke Center

Adventist Medical Center, a nonprofit, 302-bed acute care hospital in southeast Portland, Ore., has been named a Certified Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission. This distinction means AMC offers fast and effective stroke care, and has a commitment to continuing education and improvement to issues connected with stroke.

The public will have access to nationally-consistent performance data for almost 1,000 Australian hospitals online for the first time at the federal government’s MyHospitals website. The website includes information on 922 public and private hospitals around the country and is live at 11am (AEDT) on Friday.

A school-based intervention program helped New York City high school students with moderate to severe asthma better manage their symptoms, dramatically reducing the need for urgent care, including hospitalizations and emergency room visits, according to a study published online in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Upperman, MD, director of the Trauma Program at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, has co-authored a call to action for filling a significant gap in pediatric public health care and seeks federal oversight to establish the framework for a pediatric applied trauma research network (PATRN). Health care systems inadequate for managing acute GI hemorrhage outside of normal hours

Patients treated by Welsh hospitals for upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding were 41% more likely to die if they were admitted on a public holiday and 13% more likely if it was at the weekend, according to research in the January issue of Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

Mortality is higher in for-profit than non-profit dialysis centers, says study

If you need dialysis for advanced kidney disease, where you get it could make a big difference. A large study found that patients in certain large chain facilities are significantly more likely to die than those treated elsewhere. Mortality was also higher in for-profit than non-profit dialysis centers.
