Lotus receives Chinese SFDA approval for R-Bambuterol Hydrochloride Phase I human clinical trials

Flu deaths analyzed for future lessons

A new report has looked at all of England’s swine flu deaths in children under 18 during the 2009 pandemic. Researchers found that there was a higher risk of dying from the influenza A H1N1 strain of flu among certain groups of children, such as those with pre-existing conditions and those of a Pakistani or Bangladeshi background. However it was unclear why.

The DMC Board voted this afternoon to extend their definitive purchase agreement with Vanguard Health Systems through the end of the year, allowing more time to complete governmental approvals. Vanguard's purchase of – and $850 million capital investment in – the Detroit Medical Center is the single largest private investment in Detroit's history.

The Beryl Institute Survey finds patient experience as an emerging priority among hospitals

In Spring 2010, The Beryl Institute surveyed more than 200 hospitals and other healthcare providers to learn where improving patient experience fell on their list of strategic priorities and what patient experience efforts they had implemented within their organizations. The findings of the survey are reported in the research brief, Insights into the Patient Experience, just released by the Institute.

Blocking receptor contributing to memory deficits may prevent memory loss after anesthesia

Memory loss after anesthesia is a common adverse event upon awakening from surgery. Unfortunately the cause of such memory loss is unknown and there are no known treatments or prevention strategies. A study published in the November 2010 issue of Anesthesiology indicates that this memory loss could be prevented by blocking a receptor thought to contribute to memory deficits. Such a treatment may be able to solve the feeling of mental confusion that surgical patients so often feel shortly after coming out of anesthesia.

Study finds passive safety engineered devices effective for NSI prevention

A landmark study of 22 million safety devices used in 61 French hospitals over a two-year period has confirmed the theory that passive, fully automatic safety devices offer significantly better protection against accidental needlestick injuries (NSIs) than early generation active safety technologies such as semi-automatic (push-button) devices or those with manually sliding shields or hinged caps.

Two-thirds of fetuses with HLHS have strong chance of survival

When prenatal diagnosis detects the severe heart defect hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) in a fetus, a comprehensive prenatal evaluation is important to provide parents an accurate prognosis. In HLHS, one of the heart's pumping chambers is severely underdeveloped. However, say researchers, in two-thirds of cases, reconstructive surgery affords the infant an excellent chance of early survival.

New type of radiation reduces GI side effects but does not improve survival rate in prostate cancer patients

A new British review of existing research suggests that while a newer type of radiation for the treatment of prostate cancer does not help patients live longer compared to an older type at least when similar doses are given it does appear to reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
