Exactech fourth quarter total revenue increases 7% to $51.8 million

Exactech, Inc., a developer and producer of bone and joint restoration products for hip, knee, extremities, spine and biologic materials, announced today that revenue for 2010 increased 7% to $190.5 million from $177.3 million in 2009. Diluted earnings per share for the year was $0.80 based on net income of $10.5 million.

California researchers receive InHealth grant to evaluate device-intensive procedures

The Institute for Health Technology Studies has awarded a $263,000 grant to a research team at the University of California, Berkeley, to identify and analyze the strategies that hospital systems employ to evaluate and purchase implantable medical devices for cardiac, spinal, and orthopedic procedures.

Knee replacement surgery keeps one active even after 20 years: Study

A latest study has shown that patients with artificial knees were still functional after 20 years, even jogging or playing tennis. The researchers looked at people who had knee replacements between 1975 and 1989 in the state of Indiana and noted that they lived for another 20 years maintained an active lifestyle. All reported at least “moderate” activity.

First implantation of Amedica/US Spine's Infinia silicon nitride ceramic femoral head performed in hip replacement

Amedica/US Spine, a spine and reconstructive implant and instrument manufacturer focused on unique silicon nitride (SiN) technologies, implanted its first silicon nitride total hip implant this week in the international marketplace. A patient at the George Provincial Hospital in Western Cape South Africa received the implant that uses an Infinia silicon nitride ceramic femoral head as part of the total implant.

New research shows high functionality after knee replacement even after two decades

Most patients who undergo total knee replacement are age 60 to 80. More than 90 percent of these individuals experience a dramatic reduction in knee pain and a significant improvement in the ability to perform common activities. However questions have been raised about the decline in physical function over the long term despite the absence of implant-related problems.

Study: Simultaneous knee replacement linked with higher risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes within 30 days

Replacing both knees in one surgery, or simultaneous total knee replacement was associated with significantly fewer prosthetic joint infections as well as other revision knee operations within one year after surgery, compared with total knee replacements performed in two separate procedures.

NYU Langone one of 16 centers chosen to participate in American Joint Replacement Registry

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center has been chosen as one of only 16 centers across the country to participate in the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR). The AJRR is a national, independent, not-for-profit organization created to collect key joint replacement and revision data in order to better to monitor device performance and identify underperforming processes while providing information supporting best practices in safety, cost control and advances in technology.

An estimated 10 million Americans suffer from knee osteoarthritis (OA), making it one of the most common causes of disability in the US. Due to obesity and symptomatic knee OA, Americans over the age of 50 will together lose the equivalent of 86 million healthy years of life, concluded researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), who investigated the potential gains in quality and quantity of life that could be achieved averting losses due to obesity and knee OA.
