DSMB approves advancement of PLX-PAD to intermediate dose level in Phase I clinical trial for CLI treatment

Pluristem Therapeutics Inc. today announced that the independent DSMB approved the advancement to the intermediate dose level of the company’s placenta derived cell therapy, PLX-PAD, in the Phase I clinical trial in Europe for the treatment of critical limb ischemia (CLI), the end stage of peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Pro-Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that the Brussels Branch of the Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research is testing the ability of DAVANAT® to stop Galectin-3 from blocking the immune system’s action on cancer cells. Peer reviewed studies have demonstrated that Galectin-1 and Galectin-3 induce apoptosis (cell death) in immune system T cells (“Galectins,” Chapter 7, Wiley, 2008).

Celgene announces positive data from its apremilast Phase IIb study for plaque-type psoriasis

Celgene Corporation announced clinical data from an investigational Phase IIb, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of apremilast (CC-10004) in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque-type psoriasis (PSOR-005). This was a 352-patient, multi-center study in which patients received either 10mg, 20mg or 30mg of apremilast twice per day (BID), or placebo.

Alaska-Scientists identify a novel antifreeze molecule, xylomannan

Alaska-Scientists have identified a novel antifreeze molecule in a freeze-tolerant Alaska beetle able to survive temperatures below minus 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Unlike all previously described biological antifreezes that contain protein, this new molecule, called xylomannan, has little or no protein.

Pure populations of immature cells that enable male reproduction isolated and transplanted

Reproductive researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have succeeded in isolating and transplanting pure populations of the immature cells that enable male reproduction in two species-human spermatogonia and mouse gonocytes. These germline stem cells, taken from testis biopsies, demonstrated viability following transplantation to mouse testes within a controlled laboratory setting.

In the December 14, 2009 issue of the Journal of Cell Biology (www.jcb.org), Ju et al. reveal how a mutant ATPase blocks autophagy partway through to cause a multi-tissue degenerative disease.

Tiny nanoprobes have shown to be effective in delivering cancer drugs more directly to tumor cells - mitigating the damage to nearby healthy cells - and Purdue University research has shown that the nanoprobes are getting the drugs to right cellular compartments.

Haemonetics alleges continued patent infringement by Fenwal, files a new lawsuit

Haemonetics Corporation announced today that it has filed a new legal action to stop Fenwal Inc.'s continued patent infringement resulting from Fenwal's just released red cell collection kits, using a modified separation chamber. Fenwal allegedly modified its separation chamber to circumvent Haemonetics' patent and the injunction entered by the Court prohibiting Fenwal's continued sale of infringing products after December 1, 2010.
