Nasal spray to prevent fat and plaque built up in the heart on the horizon

Researchers found a treatment that was much more effective in removing fat from arteries than established methods. The vaccine can be given as an injection or in a slightly different form as a nasal spray. A trial on 144 heart disease sufferers is under way in the US and Canada.

Elective endovascular aneurysm repair benefits men more than women

A study published in the April issue of Journal of Vascular Surgery reports that women derive less benefit than men from elective endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA's). The research was done at The Vascular Group, The Institute for Vascular Health and Disease, Albany Medical College, The Center for Vascular Awareness Inc., in Albany, NY.

Lumbar puncture, PET scan not useful to establish diagnosis of Alzheimer's

Investigators from the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, have shown that in most elderly patients invasive and expensive techniques, i.e. lumbar puncture and PET scan, are not useful to establish the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. They arrived at this conclusion after analysis of data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), a large collaborative research project of medical centers in the USA and Canada.

VasoStitch percutaneous access-and-closure system featured at ACC annual meeting

Rivaroxaban safer, effective than standard therapy in treating PE

A novel oral anti-coagulant outperformed the injected standard therapy on important safety measures for initial and long-term treatment of pulmonary embolism - a blockage of lung blood vessels usually caused by a clot - and showed comparable efficacy, according to data from the EINSTEIN-PE trial presented today at the American College of Cardiology's 61st Annual Scientific Session.
