U.S. Army renews mPhase Technologies' Phase II STTR grant

mPhase Technologies, Inc. announced today that their Phase II STTR Grant was renewed by the U.S. Army. The two year grant was initially awarded in September 2008 for the amount of $750,000. mPhase will continue to develop the Smart NanoBattery under this grant program through September 2010.

Now, leading an international team, Johns Hopkins researchers have identified several genetic links to autism, chief among them a variant of semaphorin 5A, whose protein product controls nerve connections in the brain.

NEI awards Case Western Reserve $1.57M for bacterial keratitis research

Researchers at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have been awarded a $1.57 million renewal grant from the National Eye Institute (NEI) of the National Institutes of Health to continue their study of corneal infections, specifically, bacterial keratitis, associated with contact lens wear. The grant will extend the work initiated last year with the receipt of a $2.4 million, five-year grant from the NEI.

Hutchinson Center scientists awarded $16.7M to develop progenitor and stem cell tools

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute has awarded a total of $16.7 million to Irwin Bernstein, M.D., and Beverly Torok-Storb, Ph.D., both members of the Clinical Research Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The Hutchinson Center grants represent part of a $170 million effort involving 18 teams of research scientists dedicated to developing stem- and progenitor-cell tools and therapies.

A team from the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Research Institute has identified a protein that inhibits insulin production in mice - work that offers a new way of understanding, and perhaps of one day treating, both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Susquehanna Health acquires a Daxor blood volume analyzer

Daxor Corporation, a medical instrumentation and biotechnology company, today announced the receipt of a signed trial agreement from Susquehanna Health of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. This will provide Susquehanna Health with a Blood Volume Analyzer-100 (BVA-100), an instrument which enables semi-automated measurement of a patient's total blood volume, red blood cell volume and plasma volume.

Pfizer-FRSQ Innovation Fund supports genetic study of inflammatory bowel disease and cancer

The first two research projects supported by the Pfizer-FRSQ Innovation Fund will investigate differences in the genetic code for inflammatory bowel disease and metastatic colorectal cancer.
