HSPH's survey on H1N1 vaccines

In a new survey, Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers found that just 40% of adults are "absolutely certain" they will get the H1N1 vaccine for themselves, and 51% of parents are "absolutely certain" that they will get the vaccine for their children. The survey examined the reasoning among those who said they would not get the vaccine or might not. This is the latest in a series of surveys of public views concerning the H1N1 flu outbreak undertaken by the Harvard Opinion Research Program at HSPH. The polling was done September 14-20, 2009.

Survey: Recession affects 53 percent women with their decision on facial plastic surgery

The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) will announce the results of a survey conducted with Dermik Laboratories, a business of sanofi-aventis U.S. LLC, which found that 53 percent of women who are considering facial plastic surgery say the economy has affected their decision to move forward with anti-aging procedures or treatment options. As a result, slightly more than 30 percent of women considering facial plastic surgery in the near future have looked for less costly procedures or treatment alternatives. The survey will be presented today at the Academy's Annual Fall meeting and will be available on a live Web cast at www.aafprs.org.

Researchers study the role of CHRNA3 and CHRNA5 genes in lung cancer

A recent study published in the October 2009 issue of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology determined that variations of specific genetic markers identified in previous research, or SNPs, may indicate a greater lung cancer risk in African Americans than in whites. The genes CHRNA3 and CHRNA5 may contribute to lung cancer risk due directly or through their association with nicotine dependence.

Spire Healthcare's private hospital in Southampton has pioneered a new technique which uses stem cells to repair damaged bones. Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Douglas Dunlop carried out the procedure which may prevent thousands of people from needing hip replacement operations in the future.

Sagent announces launch of vinorelbine injection

Study finds link between allergic inflammation and nephropathy in men with type 2 diabetes

For men with type 2 diabetes, a cell type linked to allergic inflammation is closely linked to a key indicator of diabetic kidney disease (nephropathy), suggests a study in the November Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN). "Allergy is a common disease that is increasing worldwide, so our findings may have important implications for diabetic nephropathy," comments Michiaki Fukui, MD (Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, Japan).

NEDD9 protein stimulates aggressive metastatic breast cancer

Researchers at Fox Chase Cancer Center have demonstrated that a protein called NEDD9 may be required for some of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer to grow. Phase 1b clinical trial results of PEG-Interferon lambda to be presented

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and ZymoGenetics, Inc. EMEA grants positive opinion for Baxter's CELVAPAN H1N1 pandemic vaccine

Baxter International Inc. today announced that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) granted its “positive opinion” for CELVAPAN H1N1 pandemic vaccine using Baxter’s Vero cell technology.
