The National Trauma Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding trauma research in the United States, will grant $2.8 million to promising trauma studies. In its second national request for proposals, NTI seeks rigorous clinical studies, especially those addressing hemorrhage, intensive care, trauma systems or pre-hospital care.

Trauma patients without insurance are more likely to die of their injuries from auto accidents and gunshot wounds than privately insured patients with similar injuries, according to findings of an analysis of 193,804 patients from 649 facilities conducted by University Buffalo emergency medicine physicians.

Researchers identify 2,630 proteins that reside in human spinal fluid

A research team has sharply expanded scientific knowledge of the composition of human spinal fluid. The researchers have identified 2,630 proteins that reside in fluid that is considered "normal," a number nearly three times as great as the total number of proteins previously identified. Another striking finding was that more than half (56%) of the proteins were relatively unique to the spinal fluid and not found in blood.

Study: ChEI improves driving skills in patients with mild AD

A promising study from Rhode Island Hospital demonstrated that cholinesterase inhibitors, a type of medication often prescribed for Alzheimer's disease, improved some cognitive skills in patients with mild AD - skills that are necessary for driving. Findings from the study showed that after being treated with a ChEI, AD patients improved in some computerized tests of executive function and visual attention, including a simulated driving task.
