Uninsured patients more likely to die from gunshot injury than insured patients: Study

New research findings published in the March issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons indicates that despite similar injury severity, uninsured patients were significantly more likely to die after hospital admission for gunshot injury than were insured patients. This difference could not be attributed to demographics or hospital resource use, and held true even after adjusting for the effects of race, age, gender, and injury severity.

Baxter International, DVC present Phase III clinical efficacy data for PREFLUCEL

Baxter International Inc., in conjunction with DynPort Vaccine Company LLC, a CSC Company, today presented Phase III study data measuring the clinical efficacy for PREFLUCEL, a trivalent seasonal influenza candidate vaccine. PREFLUCEL is made using Baxter’s Vero cell culture platform and does not contain an adjuvant or preservatives. The Advanced Wound Management division of Smith & Nephew, Inc., a subsidiary of Smith & Nephew plc., notes the decision returned today by a jury in the patent litigation brought by Kinetic Concepts Inc. before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. In that case, the jury found U.S. Patent Nos. 5,645,081 and 7,216,651 to be infringed by Smith & Nephew's RENASYS-F (Foam) Dressing Kit, which delivers Negative Pressure Wound Therapy to patients in need.
