FDA clears Toshiba's Auto-IMT ultrasound software tool

For physicians, the ability to streamline exams for determining a patient's risk for cardiovascular disease is important in determining the patient's clinical pathway. To enhance diagnostic efficiency, Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. has introduced Auto-IMT, an ultrasound software tool that can measure the thickness of the intima-media layers of the carotid artery, for evaluating an asymptomatic patient's risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Sanofi-aventis, Sunnybrook enter agreement to develop and commercialize vasculotide

Sanofi-aventis and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre announced that they have entered into a research agreement and licensing option for vasculotide, an investigational compound to treat chronic wounds. This includes neuropathic diabetic foot ulcers caused by a lack of sensation and neuropathic ulcers that are complicated by peripheral arterial disease, commonly called neuroischemic diabetic foot ulcers.

Early signs of cardiovascular disease manifest before onset of puberty in children with diabetes: Study

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in patients with diabetes. Patients with type 1diabetes have a 200 percent to 400 percent greater chance of developing cardiovascular disease than those without diabetes. Medical College of Wisconsin researchers at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin discovered the early signs of cardiovascular disease are likely to manifest before the onset of puberty in many children with diabetes.

OXiGENE, NCI/CTEP and GOG collaborate on ZYBRESTAT Phase 2 study in relapsed ovarian cancer

OXiGENE, Inc., a clinical-stage, biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapeutics to treat cancer and eye diseases, announced today that it has entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP) to collaborate on the conduct of a randomized Phase 2 trial of ZYBRESTAT in combination with bevacizumab in patients with relapsed ovarian cancer.

New clinical trial to test surgery specifically for Type 2 diabetes

A new clinical trial at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center is among the first to test surgery specifically for Type 2 diabetes. The aim of the study is to understand whether surgery can control diabetes, as well or even better than the best medical treatment available today. This is the first study of its kind open to patients who are overweight or mildly obese.

A new study suggests that regular intake of diet soda may be boosting the risk of stroke. Stroke is the third leading killer following heart disease and cancer, in the United States. More than 137,000 people a year die from stroke, according to the American Stroke Association.
