AVRF and UPEI collaboration awarded Innovation PEI Pilot and Discovery Fund grant

Atlanta Vascular Research Foundation (AVRF), together with its collaborators at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), has been awarded an Innovation PEI Pilot and Discovery Fund grant by Innovation PEI. The grant is to continue research and development in combining nutraceuticals to magnify clinical benefits for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The funding from this grant is $25,000.

FDA Advisory Committee recommends expanded indication for Abbott's RX ACCULINK Carotid Stent System

Abbott today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Circulatory System Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee voted that, for symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid artery disease patients at standard surgical risk, there is reasonable assurance that the benefits of the RX ACCULINK® Carotid Stent System outweigh its risks (Yes: 7, No: 3, Abstain: 1).

Human model of rare genetic disease reveals new clues to aging process

Scientists from A*STAR's Institute of Medical Biology (IMB) in Singapore and the University of Hong Kong's Department of Medicine have produced the world's first human cell model of progeria, a disease resulting in severe premature ageing in one in four to eight million children worldwide. This model has allowed them to make new discoveries concerning the mechanism by which progeria works.

Grayscale IVUS and VH IVUS tissue characterization software help accurate assessment of blockage risk

Volcano Corporation today announced the publication of results from the PROSPECT (Providing Regional Observations to Study Predictors of Events in the Coronary Tree) study in The New England Journal of Medicine showing that grayscale intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and Volcano's proprietary VH® IVUS tissue characterization software enable physicians to more accurately assess the risk of individual blockages than the use of the current standard-of-care-- angiographic imaging-- alone.

Merck provides additional information about DSMB recommendations for vorapaxar TRA-2P study

Merck reported today that investigators in the TRA-2P study of vorapaxar have been provided with additional information about the recommendations of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) regarding the TRA-2P study. The additional information was sent yesterday in a communication to investigators from the Operations Committee of the TRA-2P study of vorapaxar. Vorapaxar is one of Merck's investigational cardiovascular medicines.
