Heart surgery is done to correct problems with the heart. More than half a million heart surgeries are done each year in the United States for a variety of heart problems. Heart surgery is used to correct heart problems in children and adults. This article discusses heart surgeries for adults. The most common type of heart surgery for adults is coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). During CABG, surgeons use healthy arteries or veins taken from another part of the body to bypass (that is, go around) blocked arteries. CABG relieves chest pain and reduces the risk of heart attack.

Seattle Children's Research Institute receives grant to improve health of infants with heart defects

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Office of Orphan Products Development has awarded Seattle Children's Research Institute a $1.6 million grant to lead a 4-year, multi-site clinical trial aimed at improving long-term health in infants born with a heart defect.

3D-printed heart model created by Materialise

Materialise (Nasdaq:MTLS), a pioneer in 3D Printing for medical applications, recently created a 3D-printed heart model for doctors at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to support Bradley White’s case, a 16-year-old boy who was born with a tumor. Researchers find way to take pediatric patient's skin cells

Researchers have found a way to take a pediatric patient's skin cells, reprogram the skin cells to function as heart valvular cells, and then use the cells as part of a tissue-engineered pulmonary valve. Study reveals impact of new onset postoperative AFib on patient mortality rates

New onset postoperative atrial fibrillation (AFib, or abnormal heartbeat) occurs in one-out-of-five heart surgery patients and is associated with an increased risk of additional complications, including double the risk of death, according to a study in the August 2014 issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

North Carolina senators were not persuaded Thursday to accept Medicaid spending numbers for the coming year from Gov.
