Haemonetics net revenue increases 8% to $235.8 million in Q2 fiscal 2014

Haemonetics Corporation today reported second quarter fiscal 2014 net revenue of $235.8 million, up 8%, GAAP net income of $16.5 million and earnings per share of $0.32. Adjusted net income, exclusive of transformation, integration and deal amortization expenses detailed below, was $34.4 million, up 24%, and adjusted earnings per share were $0.66, up 24%. Excluding currency impact, net revenue was up 11% in the quarter.

An international research consortium led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the University of Chicago has answered several questions about the genetic background of obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette syndrome, providing the first direct confirmation that both are highly heritable and also revealing major differences between the underlying genetic makeup of the disorders.

McKesson’s revenues increase 11% to $33B in second quarter 2014

McKesson Corporation (NYSE:MCK) today reported that revenues for the second quarter ended September 30, 2013 were $33 billion, up 11% compared to $29.8 billion a year ago. On the basis of U.S. generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP"), second-quarter earnings per diluted share was $1.74 compared to $1.67 a year ago.

Multi-center study finds causes for neonatal mortality in infants with HLHS

A first-of-its-kind study led by Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine, published online in the journal, Circulation, found that infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome born far from a hospital providing neonatal cardiac surgery for HLHS have increased neonatal mortality, with most deaths occurring before surgery.

HIV testing more effective than brief patient-centered counseling in preventing AIDS

For decades, people seeking an HIV test have been counseled on realistic and achievable steps they could take to avoid infection. But a national study led by Miller School investigators has determined that, given the rapid HIV tests available today, the resources devoted to pre-test counseling would be better spent on universal testing that could detect more HIV cases earlier, and link newly infected people to the treatment that could halt the spread of the virus.

Tissue-engineered transplants safe and effective in the long term: Study

New results published in The Lancet today [Wednesday 23 October] reveal that five years after the first successful transplantation of a tissue-engineered airway (reported in The Lancet in 2008) the recipient continues to enjoy a good quality of life, and has not experienced any immunological complications or rejection of the implanted airway.

IBM joins with University Hospital Zurich to test new prototype tool for diagnosing cancer

IBM scientists are collaborating with pathologists at the University Hospital Zurich to test a new prototype tool to accurately diagnose different types of cancer. This work is based on a technology developed by IBM scientists called a microfluidic probe, which slightly resembles the nib of a fountain pen.

The Affordable Care Act's botched rollout has stunned its media cheering section, and it even seems to have surprised the law's architects. The problems run much deeper than even critics expected, and whatever federal officials, White House aides and outside contractors are doing to fix them isn't working. But who knows? ... Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is even refusing to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee in a hearing this coming Thursday. ... The department is also refusing to make available lower-level officials who might detail the source or sources of this debacle (10/18).

Anacor Pharmaceuticals appoints arbitrator to resolve its dispute with Valeant Pharmaceuticals

Anacor Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ANAC) today announced that the arbitrator appointed to resolve its dispute with Valeant Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Valeant), successor in interest to Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences, Inc. (DPS), has issued an Interim Final Award in favor of Anacor, awarding Anacor $100 million in damages as well as all costs of the arbitration and reasonable attorney's fees.

WHO: Iron deficiency causes loss of 48,225 disability-adjusted life-years worldwide

Data supporting the need for better recognition of iron deficiency will be presented this week at the United European Gastroenterology Week Congress in Berlin. Iron deficiency is frequently under-diagnosed, resulting in increased hospitalisation, reduced quality of life and higher death rates in patients with comorbid conditions. The WHO has estimated that iron deficiency causes the loss of 48,225 disability-adjusted life-years worldwide, more than is seen with lung cancer.
