The lipid-exchanged, anatomically rigid, imaging/immunostaining compatible, tissue hydrogel (CLARITY) method was initially designed in 2013 by Chung and Deisseroth at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Using this process, post-mortem organs can be labeled for proteins and nucleic acids, enabling analysis of intact samples to create detailed 3D images.

Exclusive breastfeeding policy implemented in South Africa amidst criticism

On Sunday, South Africa's nine provinces began promoting the Tshwane Declaration, which "states unequivocal support for [exclusive breastfeeding (EBF)] for all infants up to six months, including HIV-exposed infants, who should receive antiretrovirals (ARVs) to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), as recommended in the 2010 World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines," Inter Press Service reports.

BMI not linked with either surgical complications or esophageal cancer patient survival

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., have found - contrary to previous studies linking inferior outcomes in patients with gastrointestinal malignancies to higher body mass index (BMI) - that in their study of BMI and negative outcomes, there was no such link. They concluded that BMI was not associated with either surgical complications or esophageal cancer patient survival.
