Drug delivery is a term that refers to the delivery of a pharmaceutical compound into the body. Most common methods of delivery include the preferred non-invasive oral (through the mouth), nasal, pneumonial (inhalation), and rectal routes. Much research is now focussing on nanotechnology as a drug delivery method.

New review points to most promising areas for liposomes' further development

An international group of scientists, including Vladimir Chupin, head of the Biophysics Section at MIPT, and Vladimir Torchilin (Northeastern University, the USA), one of the world's leading experts in pharmacology, recently presented a review of liposomes, microscopic capsules widely used all over the world in the development of new drugs.

Impax sells U.S. rights to Daraprim brand for $55 million to Turing Pharmaceuticals

Impax Laboratories, Inc. today announced that it has sold its U.S. rights to the Daraprim brand to Turing Pharmaceuticals AG for approximately $55 million.

Flowonix Medical's new Patient Therapy Controller approved for market release

Flowonix Medical, Inc., announced today that its newest product, the Patient Therapy Controller (PTC), has been approved for market release. The PTC interfaces with the company's Prometra platform of intrathecal infusion devices. A small, hand-held device with a touch-screen, the PTC allows the patient to initiate a bolus delivery of medication from the implanted pump.

BD reports adjusted revenues of $3.133 billion for third fiscal quarter 2015

BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), a leading global medical technology company, today reported quarterly adjusted revenues of $3.133 billion for the third fiscal quarter ended June 30, 2015, an increase of 45.2 percent over the prior-year period as reported, or 55.6 percent on a currency-neutral basis. On a comparable, currency-neutral basis, adjusted revenues grew 2.4 percent. As reported, revenues were $3.120 billion.

Northwestern gets $17.5 million NIH grant to invent, develop implantable drug delivery system for HIV prevention

Northwestern Medicine scientists have received a five-year, $17.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for an interdisciplinary project that aims to invent, develop and test an implantable drug delivery system to protect high-risk individuals from HIV infection for up to a year at a time.

Eisai, Halozyme partner to evaluate eribulin and PEGPH20 in HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer

Eisai Inc. announced today that its parent company Eisai Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo, President and CEO: Haruo Naito) and Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. (Headquarters: San Diego, California, President and CEO: Dr. Helen Torley) have signed a clinical collaboration agreement to evaluate Eisai's agent eribulin mesylate (brand name: Halaven, "eribulin") in combination with Halozyme's investigational drug PEGPH20 (PEGylated recombinant human hyaluronidase) in first line HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer.

Researchers develop evidence-based model that can predict amount of nicotine released from e-cigarette

Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center researchers at the VCU Center for the Study of Tobacco Products (CSTP) have developed the first ever, evidence-based model that can predict with up to 90 percent accuracy the amount of nicotine emitted by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette).

Moerae announces initiation of second MMI-0100 Phase 1 clinical trial for pulmonary disorders

Moerae Matrix Inc. announced today the initiation of its second Phase 1 clinical trial with MMI-0100, a first-in-class inhibitor of MAPKAP kinase 2 (MK2) that is being developed for pulmonary disorders characterized by inflammation and fibrosis. The study, conducted in the United Kingdom, is a double-blind, two-way cross-over design lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge study further evaluating the safety and tolerability of MMI-0100 when given via inhalation to healthy subjects who smoke.

New polymer gel could help create swallowable devices for ultra-long drug delivery

Medical devices designed to reside in the stomach have a variety of applications, including prolonged drug delivery, electronic monitoring, and weight-loss intervention. However, these devices, often created with nondegradable elastic polymers, bear an inherent risk of intestinal obstruction as a result of accidental fracture or migration. As such, they are usually designed to remain in the stomach for a limited time.

A study showed that scientists can wirelessly determine the path a mouse walks with a press of a button. Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, and University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, created a remote controlled, next-generation tissue implant that allows neuroscientists to inject drugs and shine lights on neurons deep inside the brains of mice.
