Early, accurate detection of superficial bladder cancer with Olympus PDD

With Olympus photodynamic diagnosis (PDD), superficial bladder cancer can be detected earlier, easier and more accurately. Bladder cancer is diagnosed by cystoscopy, the endoscopic introduction of a light source through the urethra (transurethral) into the bladder. The imaging technology PDD uses blue light to increase the contrast between tumour tissue (red) and healthy tissue (blue).

A new technique using tissue from those below-the-waist "love handles" improves cosmetic breast reconstruction in slim, athletic cancer patients without adequate fat sources elsewhere, a small Johns Hopkins study has found. The method also turns out to be less complicated than other options for surgeons as well, the research shows.

Research team to receive AACR Team Science Award

The fourth annual American Association for Cancer Research Team Science Award will be given to Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Thoracic Oncology Research Team at the AACR 101st Annual Meeting 2010. Hybridyne Imaging Technologies, Inc., a developer of compact, high-resolution gamma cameras for the detection of cancer and other abnormalities in the body, announces FDA clearance of ProxiScan. The system can be used in imaging the distribution of radionuclides in the human body using planar imaging techniques. ProxiScan may also be used intra-operatively, on pathological specimens and for endocavity applications if a protective sheath is used.

Jury ill and further adjournment in Dr Patel manslaughter trial

Hospital acquired infections on the increase

Despite being reported over a decade ago, little has been done in America to reduce hospital born infections as per a Health and Human Services department quality report for 2009 to Congress. Hospital acquired infections seem to be on the increase according to the report when compared with statistics available for 2007. The situation is being seen as critical by many health care experts.

Delcath's Phase III PHP-mel trial data accepted for presentation at ASCO's 2010 Annual Meeting
