Researchers personalizing cancer treatments for young patients

The aim of personalizing cancer treatments by targeting genomic mutations in the cancer has seen rapid advances in recent years. However, many of these targeted cancer therapies have been more frequently identified for adult patients. Recognizing a need to further explore genomic profiling in pediatric malignancies, the Hugs for Brady Foundation has committed $300,000 to the precision medicine initiative at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Foundation Medicine today announced new data from a pilot study demonstrating that its fully informative genomic profile for hematologic malignancies, FoundationOne Heme, identified both novel and previously reported clinically actionable genomic alterations in multiple myeloma cases. Drugs that enhance oxidative stress kill rhabdomyosarcoma tumor cells

Drugs that enhance a process called oxidative stress were found to kill rhabdomyosarcoma tumor cells growing in the laboratory and possibly bolstered the effectiveness of chemotherapy against this aggressive tumor of muscle and other soft tissue. The findings are the latest from the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital-Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project and appear in the December 9 edition of the scientific journal Cancer Cell.
