Athersys signs agreement with RTI Biologics for MAPC technology access

RTI Biologics Inc., a leading provider of orthopedic and other biologic implants, and Athersys Inc. a leader in regenerative medicine and cell therapy research and development, announced today an agreement under which Athersys will provide RTI access to its Multipotent Adult Progenitor Cell (MAPC) technologies.

Diamyd Medical reports potential results on NP2 Phase I clinical trial for chronic pain

Diamyd Medical AB, to date no drug related Serious Adverse Events have been reported by any patient included in Diamyd's Phase I clinical trial investigating NP2 as a potential therapy for chronic pain. Based upon the Phase I findings to date, the company is planning a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled Phase II clinical trial with NP2 in the United States.

Researchers discover low levels of DHA associated with chronic neurodegenerative disease

UC Irvine researchers have discovered that markedly depleted amounts of an omega-3 fatty acid in brain tissue samples from Alzheimer's patients may be due to the liver's inability to produce the complex fat, also contained in fish-oil supplements.Low levels of docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, have been associated with the chronic neurodegenerative disease affecting millions of Americans, but no cause had been identified.

Ohio State University receives five-year grant to improve drug therapy using gene profiles

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences has awarded a $9.1 million, five-year grant to The Ohio State University for a study titled "Expression Genetics in Drug Therapy." USPTO awards Medicis new patent for SOLODYN Extended Release Tablets

Medicis today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued U.S. Patent No. 7,790,705 related to the use of SOLODYN® (minocycline HCI, USP) Extended Release Tablets. The new patent, entitled "Minocycline Oral Dosage Forms for the Treatment of Acne," relates to the use of dosage forms of SOLODYN which provide approximately 1 mg/kg dosing based on the body weight of the person, and expires in 2027.
