IOS Press announces the 20th anniversary of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience journal

IOS Press is pleased to announce the 20th anniversary of the peer-reviewed journal Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience. Since founded in 1989 by pioneering neuroscientist Donald G. Stein, RNN has focused on the emerging field of brain plasticity, repair and rehabilitation and has published not only numerous original scientific publications, but also review papers in basic research (animal experiments, in vitro studies) and in the clinical sciences.

WSU Boonshoft School of Medicine and Miami Valley Hospital form new neuroscience institute

Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine and Miami Valley Hospital announced today the formation of the Wright State University & Premier Health Partners Neuroscience Institute to speed the transfer of research discoveries from bench to bedside, improving the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders such as stroke. Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents Eric Fingerhut joined Wright State University and Miami Valley Hospital officials in making the announcement.

Transplanting genetically modified adult stem cells into injured spinal cord increases movement recovery

Researchers at UTHealth have demonstrated in rats that transplanting genetically modified adult stem cells into an injured spinal cord can help restore the electrical pathways associated with movement. The results are published in the Feb. 24 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.

Advanced ovarian cancer: Avastin-chemotherapy combination followed by Avastin alone improves PFS

Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, today announced that a Phase III study showed the combination of Avastin® (bevacizumab) and chemotherapy followed by maintenance use of Avastin alone increased the time women with previously untreated advanced ovarian cancer lived without the disease worsening (progression-free survival or PFS), compared to chemotherapy alone. A preliminary assessment of safety noted adverse events previously observed in pivotal trials of Avastin.

FDA accepts Arena Pharmaceuticals' lorcaserin NDA

Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that its New Drug Application (NDA) for lorcaserin, Arena's internally discovered and developed drug candidate for weight management, including weight loss and maintenance of weight loss, has been accepted for filing by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Arena submitted the lorcaserin NDA on December 22, 2009, and expects to learn the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) date in the next few weeks. The PDUFA date is the target date for the FDA to complete its review of an NDA.

Catalyst Pharmaceutical Partners, NIDA partner to conduct CPP-109 Phase II(b) clinical trial for cocaine addiction

Catalyst Pharmaceutical Partners, Inc. announced today that it has signed a non-binding Letter of Intent with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to conduct a U.S. Phase II(b) clinical trial evaluating CPP-109, Catalyst's formulation of vigabatrin, for the treatment of cocaine addiction. It is anticipated that NIDA, under their agreement with Veteran's Administration Cooperative Studies Program, will provide substantial resources for the trial and that Catalyst will contribute approximately $2.5 million in resources as part of the estimated $10 million trial cost.

FDA Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee supports approval of XIFAXAN 550 mg for management of HE

Salix Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. today reported that the Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee of the FDA has recommended by a vote of 14 to 4 in favor of the approval of XIFAXAN® (rifaximin) Tablets, 550 mg for the maintenance of remission of hepatic encephalopathy (HE).

Genentech's Avastin combination Phase III study in advanced stomach cancer does not meet primary endpoint

Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, today announced that a Phase III study (AVAGAST) did not meet its primary endpoint of showing Avastin® (bevacizumab) plus Xeloda® (capecitabine) or 5-FU and cisplatin chemotherapy extended the lives of people with inoperable or advanced stomach (gastric) cancer, compared to chemotherapy alone.

Separate Complaints filed against Biovail by S.A.C. Capital Advisors and Gradient Analytics

Biovail Corporation today acknowledged that separate Complaints have been filed against the Company by S.A.C. Capital Advisors, LLC and Gradient Analytics, Inc. The Complaints, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut and the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, respectively, allege malicious prosecution related to Biovail’s 2006 filing of a lawsuit against them and others.

Sepracor Inc. and Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. (DSP) today announce the resignation of Adrian Adams as President and Chief Executive Officer and Director of Sepracor and as Executive Officer of DSP, effective immediately, and the appointment of Saburo Hamanaka as Chairman of Sepracor and Executive Officer of DSP. Sepracor and DSP also announce the planned merger of Sepracor and DSP’s subsidiary, Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma America, Inc. (DSPA), to be completed on April 1, 2010, with Sepracor as the surviving company.

University of California researchers awarded AAN's 2010 Potamkin Prize

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) is awarding its 2010 Potamkin Prize to two researchers for their work in Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), a common type of dementia. Bruce L. Miller, MD, and Lennart Mucke, MD, both of the University of California San Francisco will receive the Award during the AAN's 62nd Annual Meeting in Toronto, April 10 - 17, 2010. The AAN Annual Meeting is the world's largest gathering of neurologists with more than 2,000 presentations made on the latest advances in neurologic research.
