Study: Malpractice costs $55.6 billion annually, most in defensive medicine

An analysis by the journal Health Affairs has found that $55.6 billion, 2.4 percent of all annual health spending, is spent on medical malpractice, reports Modern Healthcare. "The estimate includes defensive-medicine activities, such as ordering tests or treatments ... which alone costs an estimated $45.6 billion per year, the study found.

"The health ministry has formed a committee to frame a policy for antibiotic use, following an uproar over a Lancet study that traced a drug-resistant bacterial superbug's origins to India," LiveMint.com reports. The panel will also look into the "excessive use of antibiotics among Indians," partly fueled by self-medication, that has increased resistance to the drugs. The article notes that the Indian government "rejected the findings of the report" but has "taken note of a lack of policy on antibiotics" (Pandeya, 9/3).

FDA grants Teleflex 510(k) clearance for ArrowEVOLUTION PICC with Chlorag+ard technology

Teleflex Incorporated today announced that it has received 510(k) market clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the company's ArrowEVOLUTION™ PICC with Chlorag+ard™ technology, a peripherally inserted central catheter with a Chlorhexedine-based solution that has been chemically-bonded into the surface of the catheter both intra- and extralumenally. Methylphenidate facilitates recovery from drug addiction

A brain-scanning study at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, conducted with collaborators from Stony Brook University, reveals that an oral dose of methylphenidate, commonly known as Ritalin, improves impaired brain function and enhances cognitive performance in people who are addicted to cocaine.

Amedica completes $30 million financing

Amedica Corporation, a developer of a broad range of innovative, unique spine and total joint implants, announced that it has completed a $30 million financing. The financing consists of $15 million in private equity and a debt facility of $15 million. Zions First National Bank provided the debt facility, and Creation Capital of New York and Austin, Texas, acted as the placement agent for the private equity piece. Creation Capital is an established banking concern that specializes in high-growth emerging health care technologies.
