The University of Lisbon (ULisboa) has launched a pioneering project using advanced sequencing technologies to identify and monitor microorganisms carried by Saharan dust. The research aims to understand how these bioaerosols (whose occurrence is increasing due to climate change) are altering Portuguese agricultural soils and influencing the quality and productivity of vineyards across the country’s wine-growing regions. The study also seeks to uncover ways to enhance crop productivity, quality, and sustainability.
Supported by MGI Tech’s high-sensitivity sequencing solutions, including the DNBSEQ-G99 platform, ULisboa is mapping the microbial composition of dust, soils, and plants. This approach enables early detection of potential risks while revealing new biotechnological opportunities for sustainable agriculture.
