Enrollment in Derma Sciences DSC127 Phase 2 trial in diabetic foot ulcer healing to conclude September end

Derma Sciences, Inc., a medical device and pharmaceutical company focused on advanced wound care, today announced that patient screening in its DSC127 Phase 2 trial in diabetic foot ulcer healing will be completed tomorrow, and that enrollment in the trial will conclude on September 30. This randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study of up to 75 patients will look at the percentage of diabetic ulcers completely healed over a 12-week period, among other outcomes.

New article examines research on children of LGBTQ parents

New research on the children of LGBTQ people (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) has unequivocally revealed that they are not only psychologically healthy, but often appear to exhibit better social and academic adjustment and a significantly lower incidence of social problems than their peers. A new article published in the journal Family Process critically examines this research, and how it impacts LGBTQ families.

Mental illness costs Canadian economy $51 billion in lost productivity

Mental illness is associated with more lost work days than any other chronic condition, costing the Canadian economy $51 billion annually in lost productivity. In the first study of its kind, researchers from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) have calculated the actual cost of mental health leave and found that on average it's double the cost of a leave for a physical illness.

Roadside memorials to be regulated

The ACT Government has released a policy on roadside memorials. This policy will put in place restrictions on height and width of the homemade tributes to road accident victims that dot the region’s roadsides. The authorities also stress on safety issues of these memorials. Under the policy, permanent roadside memorials can be erected in a public area only if permission is obtained from nearby residents and the site is maintained.

McGill researchers pioneer anesthetics via videoconferencing

Videoconferences may be known for putting people to sleep, but never like this. Dr. Thomas Hemmerling and his team of McGill's Department of Anesthesia achieved a world first on August 30, 2010, when they treated patients undergoing thyroid gland surgery in Italy remotely from Montreal. The approach is part of new technological advancements, known as 'Teleanesthesia', and it involves a team of engineers, researchers and anesthesiologists who will ultimately apply the drugs intravenously which are then controlled remotely through an automated system.

NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals, and Hazelden, the national nonprofit focused on addiction treatment, prevention and recovery announced today a new strategic partnership focused on improving the treatment of co-occurring disorders.
