Researchers at UNC Health Care have found that using a new method for identifying bacteria and fungi in patient specimens led to a 92 percent cost reduction in the reagents needed to run clinical microbiology tests.

Anti-depressants could slow onset of Alzheimer's disease

A University of Pennsylvania researcher has discovered that the common selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) citalopram arrested the growth of amyloid beta, a peptide in the brain that clusters in plaques that are thought to trigger the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

A study of Italians who consume a diet rich in resveratrol — the compound found in red wine, dark chocolate and berries — finds they live no longer than and are just as likely to develop cardiovascular disease or cancer as those who eat or drink smaller amounts of the antioxidant.

Waters reports sales of $431 million for first quarter 2014

Waters Corporation reported today first quarter 2014 sales of $431 million, essentially flat versus sales of $430 million in the first quarter of 2013. In the quarter, the effect of foreign currency translation was neutral to sales growth.

Researchers have used a urine test to show that about a quarter of patients with supposedly treatment-resistant hypertension are actually failing to take their medications as prescribed.

Survey finds counterfeit and defective emergency contraceptives in Peru

A survey of emergency contraceptive pills in Peru found that 28 percent of the batches studied were either of substandard quality or falsified. Many pills released the active ingredient too slowly. Others had the wrong active ingredient. One batch had no active ingredient at all.
